Registration, tryouts
• North Georgia Tennis Association/Dalton Parks and Recreation Department junior team tennis is holding registration through midnight on Feb. 27 at tennislink.usta.com/teamtennis. Matches begin March 21 and the season will run from six to eight weeks. Contact Laura Rogers at (706) 270-1119.
• Applications for the 2010 Industrial Golf League at Nob North are being accepted through the end of February. Season begins in mid-April and continues through July with teams competing once a week; playoffs and a championship are also held. Each team consists of four golfers playing a point-system format against another team each week — teams can have as many as eight members on the roster, but only four may compete each week. • The Dalton Tigers’ 12-under baseball team needs two impact players who can play multiple positions and have good bats. For tryout information, call Chris Morton at (706) 218-3344.

Competitions
• A disc golf event to raise money for the Red Cross Haiti fund will be held Feb. 20 at Heritage Point Park. Player check-in will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the park pavilion. A players meeting is scheduled at 9:45; play begins at 10. Entry fees are $15 for first-timers and juniors; $30 for pro and advanced players; and $25 for all others. • The Gordon County Black History Committee and Stephen High School reunion will host a basketball tournament at 9 a.m. on Feb. 27 at the Sonoraville Recreation Complex in Calhoun. • An early bird tournament sponsored by the Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins softball team from March 8-13 will be open to only 10-under recreation teams. The format will be three pool games and a single-elimination tournament played at the high school’s softball field in Tunnel Hill. The first six teams to pay the entry fee of $125 will be taken. • The St. Patrick’s 20-TENnis Tournament for high school and middle school girls and boys is scheduled for March 12-14 at Dalton Golf and Country Club. Singles and doubles with a two-match guarantee; trophies awarded to finalists in each category. All participants will receive a tourney T-shirt and balls will be provided. • The Northwest Whitfield High School Tee Club will host a two-person select shot tournament on March 14 at Nob North. Cost is $75 per person and includes lunch, three mulligans and one red tee; awards will be presented for closest to the pin and longest drive. Funds raised will benefit the Northwest golf program. • On March 21, former pro cyclist Saul Raisin of Dalton will run in the Georgia Marathon to raise money for his RaisinHope Foundation, which benefits brain and spinal cord-related facilities. Raisin encourages runners to sign up to run with his RaisinHope team; by doing so, participants get $5 off the half-marathon entry fee and $10 off the marathon fee. The discount code for the half-marathon is raisinhalf10 and raisinmar10 for the marathon online at inggeorgiamarathon.com. Deadline is Feb. 21.
• The Spring Place Ruritan Club golf tournament, a four-man select shot event with space for 25 teams, will be played March 27 at Indian Trace Golf Course in Chatsworth with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. In the event of bad weather, it will be played April 24. Entry fee is $55 per player. Prizes include $400 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third. • The North Georgia Tennis Association’s Terry Wood Memorial City Championship Tennis Tournament will be held April 24-25. This annual event benefits the American Heart Association. Clinics, classes
• Youth softball clinics are scheduled for Feb. 20 (grades 1-4, 1:30-4 p.m.) and Feb. 28 (grades 5-8, 1:30-4 p.m.) at Northwest Whitfield High School’s softball field or gym, depending on weather. Coach Shane Ramsey and Northwest players will cover the fundamentals of hitting, throwing and position play. Cost is $25; coaches can attend free. • Northwest Whitfield baseball will host a clinic for boys in first-eighth grades from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 13 at the high school. The clinic will include individual and group instruction on fundamentals of the game from Northwest coaches and players as well as middle school coaches. The Bruins will hold a short practice at the conclusion of the clinic and participants are invited to watch. Cost is $25 and checks should be made payable to the Northwest Dugout Club; youth coaches are invited to attend for free and will receive a handbook with helpful drills and tips. Southeast fundraiser
• Southeast Whitfield’s track teams are hosting a fund-raising dinner on Feb. 25 at the high school. Tickets for dinner for two, catered by Outback Steakhouse, are $25; to-go dinners are available.
