Dinner benefiting fire and police scholarship is Monday

Police officers do more than arrest people.

Firefighters do more than put out fires.

Their contributions to the community are multidimensional, according to T.J. Kaikobad, owner of The Dalton Depot restaurant.

“It kind of goes along with the role of the police and fire departments,” Kaikobad said. “We just visualize them in their general roles. The fire department does a lot to serve the community, from building designs to safety training. If you’re looking at the police department, car seats and alcohol education, keeping kids off drugs. It’s just a widespread impact that these guys have.”

The Dalton Depot restaurant will hold a Scholarship Fundraiser Benefit Dinner on Monday from 5 to 9 p.m. The benefit is hosted by the Dalton Police Department and Dalton Fire Department to raise money for the City of Dalton Public Safety Scholarship Endowment at Dalton State College. It is sponsored by the Dalton Hospitality Association.

Tickets are $10 and are available at the Police Services Center (301 Jones St.), the Dalton Depot, the Dalton Freight Depot and from any Dalton police officer or firefighter. The dinner includes steak with scalloped potatoes and a Greek salad. Curbside take-away is available, or guests can dine at the Depot restaurant.

The scholarship benefits dependents of Dalton Police or Fire employees, or the dependents of retired DPD and DFD employees. A six-member committee (three each from the fire department and the police department) determined the selection criteria for the scholarship.  The scholarship is managed by the DSC Foundation, which decides who receives the scholarship. The Dalton State College Foundation awards more than $150,000 in scholarships each year.
