Letter: Lamb a good fit for Mercer football

Mercer folks appreciated the nice commentary by Loran Smith in Friday’s paper concerning the hiring of Bobby Lamb as the coach to lead Mercer’s re-entry into the world of football.

Mercer has realistic expectations in this regard. Securing Bobby Lamb was a great step, but it will take time to build a program. Also, it needs to be pointed out that Mercer football will be a non-scholarship program. Recruitment will be for student-athletes who love to play the game but who are interested in a quality education at an excellent academic institution, a comprehensive university with a small college atmosphere.

Athletics add much to school spirit. The basketball and baseball programs at Mercer have especially meant a great deal in this regard and football will be another positive.

Mercer’s schedule will be with other small schools and those in the Atlantic Sun Conference. So all you Georgia, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern fans relax. Mercer is not a threat.
