A Dalton woman was killed in a one-car wreck in Chattooga County Friday, according to the Rome News Tribune website.

Law enforcement officials investigating the deadly crash are not sure why Elizabeth Venita Stephens, 49, of 150 Jenkins Drive, lost control of her white 1999 GMC Sierra and veered off Gore-Subligna Road, a straightaway.

She ran off the roadway for several yards and struck a culvert in a 8-foot to 10-foot ditch. They believed she died on impact with her steering wheel. Stephens was not wearing a seat belt, officials said.

The vehicle was wedged in the ditch and required volunteer firefighters from the Gore community to anchor the truck down before trying to remove the victim.

The Gore fire crew used the Chattooga County Rescue’s Jaws of Life equipment to cut away the SUV’s roof.

Her funeral is today at 3 p.m. at Ponders Funeral Home.
