Mexicans release cartel murderer to United States
Edgar Jimenez Lugo, a U.S. citizen, served three years in a Mexican prison after being convicted of torturing and beheading at least four people and kidnapping three people on behalf of a drug cartel. He was just 14. He has now been released and returned to the United States. Jimenez, now 17, has reportedly bee sent to Texas where he has family, but U.S. officials say they cannot discuss his case because of privacy rules. – NPR
Childhood vaccinations have prevented 100 million cases of disease
A report in The New England Journal of Medicine has found that vaccination programs have prevented 100 million cases of infectious diseases in the United States alone since 1924. One of the authors of the study says childhood vaccinations have likely saved 3 to 4 million lives. But the article also notes that many diseases that had become rare because of childhood vaccinations have begun to surge again as some parents resist vaccinating their children. – The New York Times

Temperature were projected to be 15 to 25 degrees below normal in much of the region, and some areas could see temperatures nearing record lows. – AccuWeather.com

Obama’s job approval rating plunges in home state
The Democratic firm Public Policy Polling reports President Barack Obama has just a 50 percent approval rating in Illinois, with 46 percent disapproving. He carried the state by 17 percentage points in the 2012 presidential election and by 25 percent in 2008. – Public Policy Polling
