Against the advice of her attorney, former Coahulla Creek High School teacher Elizabeth Scroggs pleaded guilty on Friday to sexual assault by a person with supervisory and disciplinary authority after having a sexual relationship with a student and was sentenced to 10 years of probation as a first offender.

Scroggs will not serve any jail time and will not have to register with the state as a sex offender. The plea deal came three days before the scheduled start of her trial on Monday.

As part of her probation, Scroggs is not allowed to work in any capacity where she would have supervisory authority over anyone under the age of 16.

She was arrested on Jan. 21 at the school after a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old male student was brought to light by an anonymous tip to school officials.

District Attorney Bert Poston said if Scroggs completes all of the requirements of her probation her record will be wiped clean of the charge.
