Bridge replacement to start in summer 2017

DALTON, Ga. — Construction won’t begin until next summer, but it’s not too early for drivers to start planning for a detour near Swamp Creek bridge on U.S. Highway 41 in south Whitfield County.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) recently awarded a $1.093 million contract to Georgia Bridge and Concrete of Tucker to replace the bridge, which was built in 1949.

But GDOT Communications Officer Mohamed Arafa says work on the bridge will not begin until after local schools are out in June 2017.

“The roadway within the project area would be closed during construction, with traffic maintained utilizing an off-site 4.4-mile detour using I-75 and Carbondale Road. The good news is the detour will be in place only during the summer months when local schools are not in session and will be in place for approximately 30 to 60 days,” he said.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2018.
