First female Marine completes grueling infantry officer course

For the first time, a female Marine has completed the grueling Infantry Officer Course. The 13-week course is considered one of the toughest in the U.S. military, and one-third of the class dropped out before graduation. The Marines said in a press release that the lieutenant has “asked to keep her identity private.” The Marine Corps Times reported that 36 other women have attempted the feat before but did not make it through. — NPR

Police initially had said he was from Florida. — The Washington Post

Appeals court allows more of Texas ‘sanctuary cities’ law to go into effect

A panel of three appellate judges ruled on Monday that parts of the state’s immigration enforcement legislation, Senate Bill 4, can go into effect while the case plays out on appeal. Last month, U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia halted the part of the bill that requires jail officials to honor all detainers. He also blocked other sections that prohibit local entities from pursuing “a pattern or practice that ‘materially limits’ the enforcement of immigration laws” and another that prohibits “assisting or cooperating” with federal immigration officers as reasonable or necessary. — The Texas Tribune

Dog abandoned in Las Vegas airport with desperate note, finds new home after having ‘no other option’

Chewy has gone from having “no other option” to embracing a brand new start. In July, the tiny Chihuahua was abandoned in a bathroom at Las Vegas’ McCarren International Airport with a note that read: “Hi! I’m Chewy! My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t afford me to get on the flight. She didn’t want to leave me with all her heart, but she has no other option. My ex-boyfriend kicked my dog when we were fighting and he has a big knot on his head. He probably needs a vet. I love Chewy sooo much – please love and take care of him.” — People

NBC’s Megyn Kelly experiment unveils its latest creation, a morning-show Bride of Frankenstein

“Megyn Kelly Today” is meant to be the final, dazzling piece of Kelly’s multimillion-dollar transmogrification from steely Fox News host to a mushy, hugs-for-everybody, mid-morning TV host. It premiered Monday on NBC in the 9 a.m. hour of the “Today” show, proving only that the experiment is far from successful. The debut was like watching a network try to assemble its own Bride of Frankenstein, using parts of Ellen DeGeneres, Kelly Ripa and whatever else it can find. — The Washington Post
