- Northwest Whitfield High School senior Lexi Lyon has been chosen to participate in State School Superintendent Richard Woods’ Student Advisory Council.
Northwest Whitfield High School senior Lexi Lyon has been chosen as one of the 69 exceptional Georgia students to participate in State School Superintendent Richard Woods’ prestigious 2023-2024 Student Advisory Council.
As a member of the Student Advisory Council, Lyon will collaborate with Superintendent Woods and her fellow council members throughout the year, offering valuable insights and feedback on the influence of statewide policies in our classrooms. She will also have the opportunity to engage in discussions on multiple education-related issues, serve as the superintendent’s ambassador to her school, and participate in service projects to benefit schools and students.

“I feel honored. One of my teachers told me about it, and after discussing it with my mom, I decided to apply and ended up getting it,” said Lyon. “I feel very special and proud of what is ahead.”
The Student Advisory Council application included short essay prompts that allowed students to share their ideas for public education. Lyon was chosen based on her thoughtful essay addressing a wide variety of issues in education.
“Georgia’s public schools exist to serve students, and it is absolutely essential that we receive feedback directly from those directly affected by statewide policies,” Superintendent Woods said. “Every year, my Student Advisory Council is an incredibly valuable resource for me, and for my colleagues at the Georgia Department of Education, as we make decisions that will directly impact the classroom. The students selected for this year’s Council are a prestigious group representing schools across the state, and I look forward to working with them to expand educational opportunities for all of Georgia’s children.”
The first council meeting will be held at the Georgia Department of Education’s offices in November.
