• Dalton State College holds Homecoming activities. On Thursday, Feb. 1, Dalton State will hold a community trivia night at 6 p.m. inside the Pope Student Center. Students and members of the public are invited to take part as teams, and prizes will be awarded. There will be a food truck outside the Pope Student Center, and the school’s Roadrunner Cafe will be open. On Friday, Feb. 2, at 4 p.m. is the Homecoming parade. It will begin at the Dalton First Baptist Church parking lot at 311 N. Thornton Ave. before heading onto West Waugh Street. From there, the parade route has a right turn onto Hamilton Street and cuts right onto Crawford Street. Dalton State College President John Fuchko III and his wife Sherie will serve as marshals and lead the parade. After the parade, the college will hold a pep rally at 4:30 p.m. at the Burr Performing Arts Park at 101 S. Hamilton St. Fostering Illusions, a band made up of students from Dalton State, will perform, and there will be speakers representing the college. That night several local businesses will offer special discounts on select menu items. On Saturday, Feb. 3, Dalton State will cap off the Homecoming festivities with a home basketball game at 2 p.m. in the Bandy Gymnasium. The Roadrunners will play the University of Tennessee Southern. Members of the Homecoming Court will be presented during halftime.

• The Creative Arts Guild at 520 W. Waugh St. in Dalton hosts a Gallery Opening and Artist Reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The exhibit is titled “Origins, Destinations and Points in Between” and is a showcase of work by leading Black artists ranging from the Harlem Renaissance to today. Saturday-Sunday

• The Chickamauga Civil War Show returns to the Dalton Convention Center on Feb. 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Feb. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $10. Children under 12 and those dressed as Civil War reenactors will be admitted free. This will be the 29th year the show has been held in Dalton. The show also includes World War I and World War II memorabilia.

Monday

• The Benton MacKaye Trail Association sponsors a moderate, 5-mile hike on two loops from Three Forks Southbound. Adults may bring a leashed dog. Hike leader: Ken Cissna. For more information, contact bmtahikeleaderKC@bmta.org.

• The Board of Trustees of the Dalton-Whitfield County Public Library meets at 4 p.m. in the meeting room of the library at 310 Cappes St. in Dalton. This meeting is open to the public. The trustees will consider agenda items and actions and review proposed amendments and/or updates to the constitution and bylaws of the library. Proposed changes to the constitution and bylaws must be presented to the trustees for review at least two weeks prior to the meeting date.

• From 5:30 to 7 p.m. author Millicent Flake leads a free writing workshop for adults at the Chatsworth-Murray County Public Library. Titled “Beat the Winter Blues with Creative Writing,” Flake promises a fun evening of writing prompts and useful tips to chase away the doldrums. • The Creative Arts Guild at 520 W. Waugh St. in Dalton hosts a culinary arts class for adults titled “Mardi Gras” at 6 p.m. The cost is $90. Get your Nawlins fix and join the Guild for Louisiana favorites as people get ready for Mardi Gras. The class is for ages 21 and over. The hands-on culinary arts classes are led by chef Courtney Coffey, culinary instructor for the CTAE (Career, Technical and Agricultural Education) program at Murray County High School. The work is strenuous, and volunteers should be able to hike 30 minutes up the ridge to the work sites. Tools will be provided. • Tiffani Holbrook from the Northwest Georgia Area Agency on Aging leads a free one-hour information session about becoming a “Dementia Friend” at 3 p.m. at the Chatsworth-Murray County Public Library. Organizers say you’ll learn what dementia is, what it’s like to live with the disease and glean some tips for communicating with people who have dementia.

• The Whitfield County Senior Center hosts a Valentine’s Day Dance & Supper. Doors open at 6 p.m. Supper is at 6:30. Dancing follows. The dance “door fee” is $7. There will be door prizes and pictures. Hamilton Medical Center will display its Heart Month Heart Gallery and hold its “mini-health check clinic” from 10 a.m. to noon. • The Creative Arts Guild at 520 W. Waugh St. in Dalton hosts “Thirsty Thursday, Sip and Create” with Paula Plott Gregg from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. Each month participants will complete different art projects, from jewelry making to painting to creating seasonal decor and more. Supplies are included in the price of the class. Participants are welcome to bring their own adult beverages or purchase beverages through the Guild. • The Creative Arts Guild at 520 W. Waugh St. in Dalton hosts a workshop titled “Expressive Painting in Acrylics” with Bradley Wilson from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students will practice the methods of expressive acrylic painting while exploring a variety of subject matt er and receiving instructor feedback on their work. This class is especially geared toward those with some acrylic painting experience (sorry, not suitable for beginners). Approaching painting as play will be emphasized while focusing on solid technique and other important skills. Students will also be given “monthly challenges” for painting projects to work on at home and to bring in for critique. Students will provide their own materials; please see the Guild’s registration portal for material suggestions. This is offered as one workshop per month; you must register for each workshop you would like to attend. The cost is $40 per workshop. • Daughters of the American Revolution-certified genealogist Jennifer Harvey returns for a workshop. This workshop is for researchers who are further along in their research but have hit a wall. The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 2:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch. Sack lunches will be available for $7, or participants may bring a lunch. • The Chatsworth-Murray County Public Library has its free monthly teen activity time from 4 to 5 p.m. There will be a chocolate dipping bar set up for teens and tweens. There will be fruit, pretzels, nuts and more that can be dunked in white or milk chocolate.
