Whitfield County under Fire Weather Watch
Published 7:01 pm Friday, February 28, 2025
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has placed Whitfield County under a Fire Weather Watch due to ongoing dry conditions, gusty winds and low relative humidity, increasing the risk of fire hazards across the region. This advisory follows multiple active wildfires in neighboring areas, including Chestnut Mountain and Fort Mountain.
The wildfire at Chestnut Mountain, in Tilton on the Whitfield/Gordon County line, falls under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service and is currently around 85% contained.
A wildfire at Fort Mountain is actively being monitored and controlled by the Murray County Fire Department and Georgia Forestry.
Trending
Although Whitfield County firefighters are not currently responding to any mountain fires, they have been actively addressing several grass fires that have spread due to dry and windy conditions. Residents are strongly urged to refrain from outdoor burning until the area receives significant rain to reduce fire hazards.
According to the National Weather Service, the Fire Weather Watch will be in effect starting Saturday with monitoring of weather conditions in the following days to determine extension.
Given the ongoing dry conditions and high winds, any fires that develop could spread rapidly.
Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution and adhere to local burn permit regulations before attempting any outdoor burning.
