A state-run psychiatric hospital in north Georgia will close this summer.

Tom Wilson, a spokesman for the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, tells the Rome News-Tribune that the Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital in Rome will close June 30.

The hospital employs hundreds of workers and is now treating about 180 patients.

The closure is part of a legal settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice. The agreement also includes more community-based services for about 9,000 people with mental illness.
