HOLLY SPRINGS (AP) — Police in Holly Springs have reopened Interstate 565 southbound after a standoff with a man who killed himself.

Officers closed the southbound lanes after getting reports about a motorist with a gun.

Police spokeswoman Tanya Smith told WSB-TV  that a man wearing a bullet-proof vest stopped his car alongside the interstate about 7:30 a.m. He crossed two lanes and went under a bridge. A passer-by called police, saying the man was sitting with a gun to his head. Police negotiators rushed to the scene, but the man took his life about 9:25 a.m.

Police have not released his name, but they said he is not from the area.
