Regional library director to retire

The Whitfield County Board of Commissioners voted 4-0 Monday night to purchase shelves and furniture costing $69,453.50 for the Dalton-Whitfield County Library from Georgia Correctional Industries.

Chairman Mike Babb typically votes only in the event of a tie.

Funding for the purchase will come from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) approved by voters in March. The four-year, 1 percent tax is expected to collect $63.6 million.

Commissioners also voted 4-0 to:

• Purchase 600 weather radios from Baker’s Communication in Lakeland, Fla., for $15,288.60. The purchase will be funded from a grant from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency.

• Table a request by K.T.W. Properties to have 2.4 acres on Kraft Drive annexed into the city of Dalton. Commissioners said they wanted time to gather more information on the request.

• Re-appoint Whitfield Emergency Management Director Claude Craig to the Georgia Region 1 Emergency Medical Services Council.
