Saturday

• The 4-H County Project Achievement Speech Contest is at Dalton State College, Browning Hall. The 4th-6th-graders will present their 3-5 minute speech in their respective category. Speech times will be assigned and start at 10 a.m. with awards presented at 2 p.m. There is no cost. Register at https://forms.gle/XrBKt1KvYa375PbK6.

• The Whitfield County Senior Center on Thursday, Jan. 18, and Friday, Jan. 19, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. will accept quilts and other soft-textile crafted works of needlepoint, cross stitch, embroidery, smocking, crochet, knitting, tatting, Swedish weaving and more to be placed on exhibition for the annual Family Quilt & Soft Textile show. The center will also host a table with Janice Spence Wilmot with the Quilts of Valor program. Any veteran or family member of a veteran is welcome to stop by to learn how a veteran can receive a Quilt of Valor. The senior center is asking for the stories behind the pieces you wish to exhibit. Each item should have your name and contact information on it for identification. The open house for this “exhibition only” event will be on Saturday, Jan. 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The exhibition will run Monday-Friday, Jan. 22-26, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. • Daughters of the American Revolution-certified genealogist Jennifer Harvey returns for two winter workshops on Saturday, Jan. 20, and Saturday, Feb. 17. Beginner and intermediate researchers will attend the January workshop. Researchers who are further along in their research but have hit a wall will attend the February workshop. Each workshop will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 2:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch. Sack lunches will be available for $7, or participants may bring a lunch. Classes will meet at the Crown Gardens & Archives, 715 Chattanooga Ave. in Dalton. To reserve a spot, call (706) 278-0217 or come by the Archives. The cost is $40 for one day or $70 for both days. • The Benton MacKaye Trail Association sponsors an “easy” 2.6-mile hike of the trails of Nottley Lake with beautiful views of the lake and dam. Adults may bring a leashed dog. Hike leader: Kelly Motter. For more information, contact hikeleaderKM@bmta.org.

• The Georgia Historical Society has named the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society the Affiliate Chapter of the Year. The award will be presented at a meeting at 2:30 p.m. at the old Spring Place Methodist Church.

• The Dalton-Varnell-Whitfield County Planning Commission meets at 6 p.m. in the Whitfield County Courthouse at 205 N. Selvidge St. in Dalton.

• The Dalton Whitfield NAACP has a general membership meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Mack Gaston Community Center and it is open to all.

Jan. 30

• Former Dalton State College president Margaret Venable is honored with the unveiling of a portrait of her at the college. Open to the public, the ceremony will include a reception from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. with remarks at 5 p.m. The ceremony, presented by the Board of Trustees of the Dalton State Foundation and current Dalton State College President John Fuchko III, will take place inside Gignilliat Hall.
