Commissioners support Perdue

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue doesn’t know it yet, but he has been endorsed for re-election by all five members of the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners.

Perdue’s campaign recently sent out a list of county commissioners across the state who have endorsed him. That list included four of Whitfield County’s five commissioners: Brian Anderson, Mike Cowan, Odell Cochran and Leo Whaley. Those four, like Perdue, are Republicans.

The list didn’t include another Republican commissioner from Whitfield, Pete Pangle.

“I didn’t know I wasn’t on the list,” Pangle said Monday night after the board’s work session.

Pangle said there may have been some miscommunication between him and Perdue’s office.

“I might have gotten an e-mail and just overlooked it,” he said.

Pangle said he does endorse Perdue over rival Democrat Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor.

“There may be some things (Perdue) could have done better, but he’s the best one out there,” Pangle said.

Whaley said he supported Perdue when he first ran for governor four years ago.

“And I think he’s done a pretty good job since then. I think we continue on with him,” he said.

Cowan said he believes, on the whole, Perdue’s term as governor has been good for Georgia and good for Whitfield County.

“The state’s financial situation is better than it was four years ago, and the governor has been able to restore or add some funding to transportation. We have received additional funds for repaving,” Cowan said.
