The transition from elementary school to middle school can be tough for students. One Dalton Middle School teacher volunteers to ease the transition.
Kevin Keylon organizes the “Cougar Countdown,” a task she does outside her normal duties as a sixth-grade social studies teacher at Dalton Middle School. The Cougar Countdown brings fifth-grade students to the middle school for a day to learn more about what they will experience as sixth-graders.
“For the past two years, this special event has been anticipated by every fifth-grader in the Dalton Public School System,” said Debbie Carnes, who nominated Keylon. “She does not get paid extra for this.”
Keylon organizes a pep session, scavenger hunts throughout the school and a Cougar store with Dalton Middle School items.
“She also organizes and trains peer helpers who assisted the fifth-grade students with tours of the school as well as question and answer sessions,” Carnes said. “Kevin manages to do these things with patience and a smile on her face at all times. Kevin’s tireless work, exceptional creativity and abundant energy have helped to make this day informative, educational and entertaining for rising sixth-grade students.”
For her volunteer effort at Dalton Middle School, The Daily Citizen names Kevin Keylon as its Citizen of the Week.
