Fiddlers’ convention planned for Nov. 22

The annual Ellenboro Fiddlers’ Convention is returning the Saturday after Thanksgiving – the same time of year as when the event first began in 1925. Relying on its tradition for great bluegrass performances, the convention draws acts from several states and packs the house every year. No electric instruments allowed.
Musicians come from North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia to have their playing judged. There are first, second and third place prizes for best band – with the top prize being $400. Individuals are also judged and prizes awarded for fiddle playing, of course, but also for singing and for other instruments like banjo, mandolin, guitar and more.
Legends such as Earl Scruggs played the convention, which first began in Hollis, NC at the local elementary school. J.P.D. Withrow started the convention in memory of his recently-deceased wife Laura and it served as the school’s biggest fundraiser each year.
Hollis Elementary is long gone, but after a few years’ hiatus, the convention moved nearby to Ellenboro Elementary. There, strong as ever, it once again serves as a community fundraiser. Ticket proceeds go to fund the annual Colfax Free Fair, held in Ellenboro in September.
