The Dalton Police Department will take part in the statewide Operation Zero Tolerance beginning today through July 6. Operation Zero Tolerance is a statewide mobilization of law enforcement agencies to combat drivers driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. This year’s slogan is “Over the limit, under arrest.”
The DPD’s Traffic Enforcement Unit, Situational Response Unit and Patrol Division will concentrate their efforts in fighting drunk driving. Concentrated patrols and random road checks will be held throughout the city at strategic locations.
Drivers that drink and drive should be aware of the law that goes into effect during Operation Zero Tolerance, on July 1. That law makes a fourth DUI conviction a felony in the state of Georgia, and comes just before the second deadliest day of the year on American highways, July 4. One out of three fatality crashes in Georgia are caused by an impaired driver.
The Dalton Police Department reminds motorists that drunk driving is not the only killer on roadways. The department asks motorists to watch their speed and obey Georgia’s safety belt laws to help prevent injuries and fatalities.
