Berry College forensics team wins 14th consecutive state tournament

ROME — The Berry College forensics team won its 14th consecutive Georgia Intercollegiate Forensics Association State Tournament in mid-February. The tournament, hosted by Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Ga., featured intercollegiate competition in eleven events. Berry students earned individual state championships in 10 of the eleven events. The team won a total of 30 awards at the state tournament, bringing the season award total to an amazing 130.
Sophomore Hope Stallings highlighted the competition by winning the persuasive speaking competition with an address on juvenile sex offender legislation. December graduate Danielle Stice finished second in the same category with a speech on illegal immigration. As a result of their success at the state tournament, Hope and Danielle will represent the state of Georgia at the Interstate Oratory Contest, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious speech tournament, to be held this year in Madison, Wis.
Individual awards were:
• Hope Stallings was the state champion in informative speaking, persuasive speaking and rhetorical criticism. Hope, a sophomore communication major, is the daughter of Stan and Angela Nix of Ringgold, Ga.
• Caitlin Carroll was the state champion in extemporaneous speaking. She also was second in after-dinner speaking and third in impromptu speaking. Caitlin, a junior government major, is the daughter of Daniel and Robin Carroll of Marietta, Ga.
• Amanda Dean was the state champion in after-dinner speaking. She also was second in informative speaking and third in persuasive speaking. Amanda, a junior communication major, is the daughter of John and Yevone Dean of Acworth, Ga.
• Anna Zimmerman was the state champion in prose interpretation and dramatic duo interpretation. She also was second in dramatic duo and third in after-dinner speaking. Anna, a senior French major, is the daughter of Carl and Sarah Zimmerman of Snellville, Ga.
• Keith Brooks was the state champion in poetry interpretation, impromptu speaking and dramatic duo interpretation. He also was second in prose interpretation. Keith, a senior theatre major, is the son of Wayne and Glenda Brooks of Canton, Ga.
• Radhika Dhir was the state champion in dramatic interpretation and was second in poetry interpretation. Radhika, a senior accounting major, is the daughter of Krishna and Shailaja Dhir of Mount Berry, Ga.
• Rob Powell was second in impromptu speaking and extemporaneous speaking and was third in rhetorical criticism. Rob, a senior communication major, is the son of Mark and Kathy Powell of Fortson, Ga.
• Danielle Stice was second in dramatic duo interpretation and second in persuasive speaking. Danielle, a graduate with a degree in international studies and Spanish, is the daughter of Dr. Steven and Tracey Stice of Athens, Ga.
• Erin Froetschel was second in dramatic interpretation. Erin, a sophomore music major, is the daughter of Mark and Dana Froetschel of Crawford, Ga.
• Christi McEntyre was second in rhetorical criticism, fourth in informative speaking, fifth in prose interpretation and sixth in poetry interpretation. Christi, a senior English major, is the daughter of Patricia McEntyre of Marietta, Ga.
