Mrs. Margaret E. Adams, 76, of Chatsworth, passed away June 14, 2010.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Charles K. and Anna Lou (Long) Adams; sisters Lucy Talley, Geneva Stark; brothers Charles, John, Marvin, Malcolm and Jack.
She is survived by sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia Hawkins and Donald of Chatsworth and Inez Livemois of White Lake, Mich.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Franklin L. Adams and Peg, James D. Adams and Jane of Chatsworth. A long list of nieces and nephews and hundreds of friends.
Margaret graduated from Lincoln Memorial University in 1957. She began her teaching career in Middlesboro, Ky., for one year. She returned to Murray County in 1958 and began teaching at the high school. Margaret taught until she retired in 1990. During her career, she taught a range of subjects. She was a cheerleader sponsor for a few years and was head coach of the girls basketball team. She resurrected the tennis program and was head coach for several years. She won several regional championships and several players went on to state playoffs. She also sponsored the yearbook for a few years.
Margaret probably touched as many lives in Murray County as anyone ever has. In 2001 she was elected to the Murray County High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame.
Margaret was elected to the Chatsworth City Council in 1972 and served 37 years as the first and only woman to serve in this capacity until leaving office. She was vice mayor for most of those years. She served with six different mayors and served as acting mayor for a period of time. She is the only woman to serve as mayor of Chatsworth.
In 1990, the Bagley Middle School Gymnasium was named the Margaret E. Adams Gymnasium.
Margaret earned and was one of the most respected and loved people in Murray County. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and relatives, as well as the entire community.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Chatsworth.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Chatsworth or the Chatsworth-Murray County Library.
