Walser Seay ‘Bud’ Chaffin

Walser Seay “Bud” Chaffin, 87, went to be with the Lord Monday evening, Dec. 12, 2005.

Bud is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dortha M. “Dot”; two sons, Walser S. Jr. (Linda) and Robert ‘Bobby’ (Darlene); two daughters, Pamelia S. McCarthy (Patrick) and Melinda C. Rosser (Joseph); six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Born in Dalton and a resident of Temple Terrace for 45 years, he retired from Watkins Motor Lines, VP sales, and then re-retired from Gene Hyde Trucking, sales manager.

Bud graduated from Dalton High School and attended Rutgers University. He was in the U.S. Navy during World War II, member of the Macon Masonic Lodge and charter member of the First Baptist Church of Temple Terrace. Bud was an orange and blue member and enjoyed the University of Florida Fighting Gator football games for over 40 years.

Services are today at noon in the chapel of Putnam-Standefer-Reed Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Medley and Tom Greer Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in Rankin Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 11 a.m. to noon.

Donald Davis

Donald Davis, 49, of Tunnel Hill, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005 in a local hospital.

Arrangements are by Williamson and Sons Funeral Home in Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.



Gary Edward Hawkins

Mr. Gary Edward Hawkins, 41, of Dalton died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, in Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Maude and Calvin Weeks; grandmother, Pate Dyer and special aunt, Georgia Luffman.

Survivors include his sons, Garrett Hawkins and Matthew Hawkins, both of Chatsworth; parents, Charles and Patricia “Pat” Hawkins of Dalton; sisters and brother-in-law, Cindy Hawkins, Dionnedrea and Eugene Hensley, all of Dalton; grandparents, Clifford and Ellen Hawkins of Dalton; nephews, Austin Center and Christian Center, both of Dalton; aunts and uncles, Jerome and Opal Dyer of Jasper Jerry and Terr-Ella Hawkins, all of Dalton; special aunts, Betty Lowery, Ruth Ledford and Elizabeth Dyer, all of Dalton.

Services are today at noon in the chapel of Love Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Trotter officiating.

Burial will be in Whitfield Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends at Love Funeral Home Friday.

John W. ‘Jack’ Little

Mr. John W. “Jack” Little of Dalton died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005.

Survivors and arrangements will be announced by Love Funeral Home, 1402 N. Thornton Ave., Dalton.



Rose Herndon Martin

Mrs. Rose Herndon Martin, 90, of Dalton, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005 at her residence.

She was born in Whitfield County, daughter of the late E.O. and Agnes Hill Herndon, and was preceded in death by her brother, John Herndon.

Rose taught first grade at Morris Street School for many years and retired from the Dalton Public School System after 41 years of service. She was a member of Dalton First Baptist Church where she was an associate organist for 22 years. She was a member of many civic organizations and an avid bird collector.

Rose is survived by her niece and nephews, Becky Jeter of Ringgold; John Herndon of Athens, Texas; and Charles Herndon of Atlanta; great-nieces, Anne Jeter and Caroline Herndon; great-nephews, David Herndon, Daniel Herndon, Chad Jeter and Zachary Herndon; great-great-nephews, Austin Graham, Drake Jeter and Ravi Jeter.

Services are Saturday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Love Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Wilson and the Rev. Phillip Cannon officiating.

Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery.

Fletcher ‘Hershel’ Painter

Mr. Fletcher “Hershel” Painter, 95, of Dalton and formerly of Ellijay, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at Regency Park Health Care.

He was born Oct. 17, 1910, son of the late Columbus B. Painter and Etta Boatright Painter and was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Scott Painter; his second wife, Fannie Bell Painter; his brother, Grady Painter; and his sister, Mae Smith.

He was a longtime member of Ellijay First Baptist Church.

Survivors are his sons and daughter-in-law, Arlen and Eva Painter of Dalton and Hugh Painter of Dalton; grandson, Michael Painter of Dalton; stepson and his wife, Gene and Wanda Jones of Panama City, Fla.; grandchildren, Brad and LaCrisa Pace and Erica Jones; great-grandson, Uriah Pace, all of Panama City; special niece, Stella Mae Swafford of Dalton.

Services are today at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of Love Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Deems officiating.

Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Marvin Whiteside

Mr. Marvin Whiteside, 77, of Dalton departed this life Friday eveing, Dec. 16, 2005, at his residence.

Arrangements will be announced by Ponders Funeral Home, 138 Melrose Drive, Dalton.226-4002.



Clara Louise Wilkerson

Clara Louise Wilkerson, 75, of Centre, Ala., and formerly of Dalton, passed away Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, in the Gadsden Regional Medical Center.

She was a native of DeKalb County, the daughter of the late Paul Franklin Burt and Angie Lee Hunt Burt.

She was a retired textile worker and a member of the Ruhama Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Troy Wilkerson; brothers and sisters-in-law, L.D. and Faye Burt and Virgil and Sue Burt and sister, Estelle Simpson all of Fort Payne; special friends, Tony and Patricia Kendrick, Robert, Jason, and Haley, several nieces and nephews.

The funeral is Sunday at 2 p.m. at Perry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Scott Hosey officiating.

Burial will be in the Walker’s Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.
