CHATSWORTH — Murray County High School may be split into two schools for the 2009-2010 school year, it was proposed by an advisory committee of department heads and coaches during a work session Thursday night of the Murray County Board of Education.

The board instructed Superintendent Vickie Reed to project the enrollment numbers for two high schools if the split occurs in August, 2009.

The division would allow the school to get out of the Class 5A athletics classification.

By Sept. 4 of this year Reed has to inform the Georgia High School Association that a new school will be ready for the 09-10 school year.

In 2009 the Ninth Grade Academy would become a ninth- and 10th-grade school that would feed the new high school.

The current high school would fulfill the second year of a two-year schedule cycle in Class 5A this fall.

About a dozen coaches and administrators attended the meeting at the school system’s central office board room.

Also, the school board approved a $58.2 million budget for the 2008 fiscal year.
