The city of Varnell will not hold a special election for mayor on July 15, primary day. Mayor pro tem David Owens said the city did not receive approval from the U.S. Justice Department in time to properly advertise the election. Owens said the city would have had to have approval by June 13.
The City Council voted earlier to hold a special election for mayor in November if the city did not receive approval from the Justice Department in time for a July election. The city could hold an election in September, but Owens said holding it in November, to coincide with the presidential election, will save the city money.
The city will hold two referendums on July 15. One will ask voters to approve the sale of distilled spirits by the drink and the other will ask them to approve Sunday sales of spirits by the drink.
