Work crews are giving the Dalton stretch of the Norfolk Southern railway a bit of a face lift. Several intersections are expected to be closed as the work continues.

“We’ve got a track gang of somewhere between 85 and 100 people replacing the track as it runs through Dalton. The work began at South Freeport Road, and it will end at Five Springs Road,” said railroad spokesman Robin Chapman.

All told, the crew will be replacing a little over seven miles of track. It’s the first time the track has been completely replaced like this in Dalton in some 15 years.

“They’ll be closing intersections as they go along, and we are encouraging people to use the overpasses at the north bypass, Waugh Street, Gordon Street and the south bypass,” said Chapman. “They’ll be finishing up Monday or Tuesday.”

According to the railroad’s Web site, Norfolk Southern has approximately 14,400 miles of track in 20 states, primarily in the Southeast and Midwest.
