Sue Lowery started her Chatsworth-based service, Helping Hands Food Pantry Inc., in 2005, but being able to serve everyone who comes there for assistance is sometimes difficult.
So far, she said, they haven’t had to turn anyone away, but that’s partly because they are open just one day a week for five hours — and partly because of generous donors like Life Touch Chiropractic in Chatsworth.
The chiropractic office collected 338 pounds of food over the holidays and recently turned it over to Lowery to be picked up. She said the gift filled up the back of her Ford Expedition and will feed as many as 15 families of four people. The collections come from patients, staff and others who donated at the chiropractic office.
“That was a lot of food,” Lowery said. “I’m telling you, I was so surprised when they called.”
Lowery said the donors at Life Touch are “angels of mercy” helping those in need. Helping Hands is a private organization that offers several food programs, including administering a United States Department of Agriculture assistance program, to people in need throughout the region.
Helping Hands is in Eton on U.S. 411 North past Eton City Hall. The pantry is open on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information or to donate, call (706) 517-0091.

Lowery said those who provided the 338 pounds of canned food are “hunger heroes.”
For their efforts in collecting food for those in need, The Daily Citizen names Life Touch Chiropractic staff and patients Citizens of the Week.
