Sailor credited with saving 20 lives on ship damaged in collision

One of the seven sailors who died aboard the USS Fitzgerald is being credited with saving 20 others before losing his life in an attempt to save more. The Fitzgerald collided with a Philippine-flagged merchant vessel off the coast of Japan on Saturday. The Fitzgerald was struck below the waterline and 37-year-old Gary Leo Rehm Jr. went under and brought out 20 people. But he died when he went back to save more. — Yahoo News

Trio charged with $300,000 avocado theft

A surge in global demand sent avocado prices to a record high in May. And police say this may have driven three California men to steal $300,000 worth of them from a produce firm where they worked. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said Carlos Chavez, Rahim Leblanc and Joseph Valenzuela have been arrested on suspicion of grand theft of fruit. — BBC

Milk alternatives may affect a child’s height

Children who drink alternatives to dairy milk, including soy, almond or rice milks, appear to be slightly shorter than their peers who drink cow’s milk, according to new research.  — CBS News

Man charged with killing Muslim girl is an illegal alien

A man accused of killing a 17-year-old Muslim girl with a baseball bat is an illegal alien from El Salvador, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Darwin A. Martinez Torres was arrested in the death of Nabra Hassanen, a high school student from Reston, Va. The case initially drew national attention because of the possibility of it being an anti-Muslim hate crime, but officials now say it was a case of road rage. — The New York Times

Hispanic homelessness surges in Los Angeles County

Recent figures released by the county show that Hispanic homelessness shot up by 63 percent in the past year, a staggering number in a county that saw its overall homeless population soar by 23 percent, despite increasing efforts to get people off the street. The percentage of white homeless people declined 2 percent in that time. African-Americans also saw a slight increase in the number of homeless, but while they make up 9 percent of the county’s overall population, they still represent a disproportionate 40 percent of the county’s homeless. — The Los Angeles Times
