• Being there for someone with a mental illness can be difficult and tiring. Sometimes you just want to let off steam. Other times you are seeking resources. There is help. The National Alliance on Mental Illness has a support group that is a safe and caring place for adults who have a family member or friend with a mental illness. Group topics include healing activities; symptoms of trauma; feelings of guilt, shame, fear and anger; self-care and coping skills; and increasing self-esteem, self-awareness and coping skills. Exhibits
• More than 400 dolls are on display at the Blunt House, a historical home built in 1848, through Friday, Dec. 29. The collection can be viewed every Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by request and during the Whitfield–Murray Historical Society’s Christmas tour of all the Whitfield properties Dec. 1-3. There are dolls for everyone’s taste: Madame Alexander dolls; Dixie dolls; Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls; Shirley Temple dolls; infant and baby dolls; Bradley dolls; Korean, Japanese and Chinese dolls; dolls from India, Europe and the Middle East; Hawaiian dolls; porcelain dolls; antique dolls and modern dolls; black, white and brown dolls.
• The Heritage Room at the Huff House has a collection of native American artifacts that honor the early inhabitants of Whitfield County. A blowgun with darts and stickball racquets with a leather ball are authentic items made by Cherokee craftsmen, and there is a copy of Sequoyah’s syllabary. • For 25 years “The Nutcracker” ballet has been a tradition during the holiday season for the northwest Georgia region. “Nutcracker 2017,” presented by the Dalton Arts Project, features more than 350 local and guest performers for eight performances: Friday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 9, at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 15, at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, Dec. 16, at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., at the Dalton High theater, 1500 Manly St. Tickets are $13-$18 and go on sale to the public today, Nov. 27, at 411 North Park Drive in Dalton. • Breakfast with Santa at the Murray County Senior Center is at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. It is hosted by Sassy’s Hope and sponsored by Dalton Funeral Home. • Polar Express Day is observed prior to the annual Christmas parade through downtown Chatsworth. The Whitfield-Murray Historical Society and the Murray County library co-sponsor the event from 1 to 5 p.m. This year the event will be in a historic storefront on the corner of Fort Street and Third Avenue. The building will be remembered as the former Fred Brown Hardware Store. There will be model Christmas trains set up and running by local train enthusiast Ted Yarbrough and other members of the Georgia Garden Railway Society. Retired educator C.L. Dunn will read “The Polar Express” on the half hour. Refreshments will be served. The event is free, but donations are requested, with all proceeds going to the continued preservation of the Depot. As an additional fundraiser, the Chatsworth Depot Committee will sell hot chocolate at the Polar Express location during the Christmas parade. • Former state representative Bruce Broadrick is the grand marshal for this year’s Dalton Noon Lions Club Christmas Parade at 6 p.m. The theme of this year’s parade is “The Sights and Sounds of Christmas,” and the parade will return to the historic parade route through downtown Dalton. • The Vann House Historic Site hosts its annual “Candlelight Tours” from 5 to 9 each night. The public is invited to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of a 19th century Christmas in one of America’s best-preserved Cherokee homes. The Vann House is at the intersection of Ga. • Anti-Dog Fighting Campaign Project Hope Community Outreach sponsors Appalachian Christmas pet photos to be taken at Dalton Distillery from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no charge; just bring a bag of cat or dog food three-and-a-half pounds or larger or two cans of wet cat food.
