• Nationwide Expos hosts the Dalton Spring Home Show at the Dalton Convention Center. Local exhibitors and national vendors will showcase the latest trends in home improvement, remodeling, interior design and outdoor living. The event is free to the public. Carpets of Dalton is presenting the show. Hours are Friday, Jan. 5, from noon to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, Jan. 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Dalton Convention Center is at 2211 Tony Ingle Parkway. • Douglas G. Frank, an avant-garde thinker, will speak at the McCutchen Mansion, 404 S. Thornton Ave. in Dalton, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. All citizens regardless of political affiliation who are concerned with the security of elections are invited as Frank presents his research into election integrity. • The Benton MacKaye Trail Association sponsors a strenuous 11.2-mile hike on the BMT Ga. 60 to Skeenah Gap. Hike leader: Steve Dennison. For more information, email hikeleaderSD@bmta.org.

• The Whitfield County Board of Education has a work session at 5:30 p.m. followed by a meeting at 6:30 at the central office, 1306 S. Thornton Ave. The meetings are open to the public.

• The Dalton Board of Education has a work session at 5 p.m. followed by a meeting at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at City Park Elementary, located at 405 School St.

• Members of the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners are expected to vote at a meeting on whether to place a Special Purpose Local Option Sale Tax (SPLOST) referendum on the May general primary ballot. The commissioners are also expected to vote on an intergovernmental agreement with the cities of Dalton, Cohutta, Tunnel Hill and Varnell that would determine how that money is spent if voters approve the SPLOST. The commissioners meet at 6 p.m. in the meeting room of the county courthouse. The meeting will be livestreamed on the county’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

Tuesday

• The Benton MacKaye Trail Association sponsors a hike on the trails of Jack Rabbit. Easy to moderate 2.5 miles. Hike leader: Ralph Collinson. For more information, contact bmtahikeleaderRC@bmta.org.

• The League of Women Voters of the Dalton Area has a luncheon meeting at noon at Pablito’s restaurant. The subject is voting rights for those who have been convicted of a felony. Ann Colloton of the Georgia Justice Project will be the speaker, with the goal to educate those who conduct voting registration or canvassing to share accurate information. Everyone is invited.

• The Tunnel Hill budget is expected to be adopted at a public meeting at City Hall (201 G. Vaughn Parkway) at 5:30 p.m.

• The Whitfield County Senior Center hosts Big Bingo at 10:30 a.m. This game is sponsored by Dalton Heating & Air. Call the center at (706) 278-3700 for more information.

Friday-Jan. 13

• At 7 p.m. the Dalton Little Theatre hosts the world premiere of a new musical, “Click.” It was written by two Dalton High School students, Ellis Stephens and Lilli Sharp. The book is by Stephens and the lyrics and music are by Sharp. This is a story about young people living with learning disabilities. Tickets are on sale at daltonlittletheatre.com.

Jan. 13

• In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2024, the MLK Committee and the Dalton-Whitfield NAACP are partnering to host special events for the community. On this day community members can join in the annual MLK Day of Service, including trash pickup on MLK Boulevard and collecting and sorting donations for the Northwest Georgia Family Crisis Center. Donations can be made at the Mack Gaston Community Center in advance and on this morning. Needed items are blankets, towels and washcloths. To participate in service, the public is invited to meet and/or drop off donations at Mack Gaston at 9 a.m. At 6 p.m. the MLK Banquet will be held at Mack Gaston. H. Beecher Hicks III will be the keynote speaker. Hicks is the president and CEO of the National Black MBA Association and formerly served as the president and CEO of the National Museum of African American Music. Tickets to the banquet are $30 and can be purchased at Mack Gaston or by contacting NAACP President Marisa Kelley at (913) 426-7870. Jan. 14

• The Benton MacKaye Trail Association sponsors a moderate to strenuous 4.6-mile hike including Weaver Creek to the Stanley Gap Trail. Hike leader: Kelly Motter. For more information, email hikeleaderKM@bmta.org.

• The Concerned Clergy of Greater Whitfield County celebrates the life of Martin Luther King Jr. An ecumenical service is at True Gospel Pentecostal Church (109 Henderson St. in Dalton) at 4 p.m. Pastor Corey Prather of Citadel of Faith from Chattanooga will deliver the Word. His choir and the Voices of Grace will render the music. All are invited.

Jan. 15

• Varnell City Hall is closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

• The Whitfield County Senior Center is closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The senior center will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

• In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2024, the MLK Committee and the Dalton-Whitfield NAACP are partnering to host special events for the community. On this day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the public can gather for a wreath laying ceremony at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Walnut Avenue in Dalton at 9 a.m. This annual tradition will be followed by another, the Prayer Breakfast at 10 a.m. at the Mack Gaston Community Center. Pastor Ed Hoggs of Shiloh Baptist Church will be the speaker. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the MLK Health Fair will take place at Mack Gaston. All events on this day are free and open to the public. Everyone in the community is warmly invited to join the MLK Committee and the Dalton-Whitfield NAACP in honoring and remembering the legacy and love of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

• Valley Point Elementary School has a school council meeting at 8:30 a.m.

Jan. 18-20, 22-26

• The Whitfield County Senior Center on Thursday, Jan. 18, and Friday, Jan. 19, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. will accept quilts and other soft-textile crafted works of needlepoint, cross stitch, embroidery, smocking, crochet, knitting, tatting, Swedish weaving and more to be placed on exhibition for the annual Family Quilt & Soft Textile show. The center will also host a table with Janice Spence Wilmot with the Quilts of Valor program. Any veteran or family member of a veteran is welcome to stop by to learn how a veteran can receive a Quilt of Valor. The senior center is asking for the stories behind the pieces you wish to exhibit. Each item should have your name and contact information on it for identification. The open house for this “exhibition only” event will be on Saturday, Jan. 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The exhibition will run Monday-Friday, Jan. 22-26, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Jan. 20

• The 4-H County Project Achievement Speech Contest is at Dalton State College, Browning Hall. The 4th-6th-graders will present their 3-5 minute speech in their respective category. Jan. 20 and Feb. 17

• Daughters of the American Revolution-certified genealogist Jennifer Harvey returns for two winter workshops on Saturday, Jan. 20, and Saturday, Feb. 17. Beginner and intermediate researchers will attend the January workshop. Researchers who are further along in their research but have hit a wall will attend the February workshop. Each workshop will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 2:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch. Sack lunches will be available for $7, or participants may bring a lunch. • The Georgia Historical Society has named the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society the Affiliate Chapter of the Year. The award will be presented at a meeting at 2:30 p.m. at the old Spring Place Methodist Church.

• The Dalton-Varnell-Whitfield County Planning Commission meets at 6 p.m. in the Whitfield County Courthouse at 205 N. Selvidge St. in Dalton.
