• The Creative Arts Guild presents a group exhibition in Gallery FIVE20 of works featuring artists from Atlanta. “ATL Imported” will run April 12-May 31. Gallery ONE11 will feature a collection of photographs incorporating the collaborative works of George and the late Rhenda Spence running from April 12-29. An opening reception for both exhibits is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Creative Arts Guild. Gallery Openings + Artist Receptions take place on the first Friday evening of each month from 5:30 to 7 with a few exceptions. They give the public the first opportunity to view and purchase from the latest exhibits in Gallery FIVE20 and Gallery ONE11, as well as the opportunity for viewers to speak with exhibiting artists and curators. Gallery Openings are always free, family-friendly and open to all. Activities for kids and refreshments are available.

Approaching painting as play will be emphasized while focusing on solid technique and other important skills. Students will also be given monthly challenges for painting projects to work on at home and bring in for critique. Refresh your home and surroundings by supporting the spring rummage sale hosted by the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society at the Crown Gardens & Archives, 715 Chattanooga Ave. in Dalton. The sale benefits the historical society and its eight historic properties. It will feature a wide variety of collectibles, jewelry, glassware, plants, artwork, furniture, kitchen items, books and other items. The organization accepts most donations with a few exceptions, such as clothes, encyclopedias, Readers Digest collections and large exercise equipment. • Dunagan families and friends, please join at 8 a.m. (or whatever time works for you) for the initial 2024 Work Day at the Dunagan Cemetery. There will be a little social time, enjoying biscuits, coffee and juice together when the project is complete. The mowing season runs April through October of each year and is always on the second Saturday of each month. “We appreciate so much the willing volunteers and wonderful support we receive each year in maintaining the cemetery grounds,” organizers said. “We especially appreciate those ‘unseen workers’ who cannot make it on Saturday but come earlier in the week to do their part and more. • The Dalton Resilient Communities Project through Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful hosts a series of free guided walks and demonstrations during April, Earth Month. These start this day at 9 a.m. with local naturalist Gretchen Lugthart leading a one-mile guided wildflower and plant walk on the College Creek Trail, part of the Roadrunner Trail System on Dalton State College’s campus. She will point out native trees and spring wildflowers and explain why they are vital to our local ecosystem. Meet at the College Creek trailhead (near the Bandy Gymnasium on the Dalton State College campus).
• The annual Model Train Expo returns to the Chatsworth Depot. The 1905 L&N Railroad Depot at 219 N. First Ave. in historic downtown Chatsworth will open for viewing the model trains at noon and remain open until 4 p.m. The 1960 SCL Caboose behind the depot and the adjacent Wright Hotel will also be open for tours during the same hours. Admission is free. Donations are always appreciated. Groups from the Atlanta and Chattanooga areas will display their model railroads. A model train set will be raffled, too. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased at the event or in advance from the Crown Gardens & Archives, the Murray County Clerk of Court’s office, Pat’s Antiques or from Depot Committee members. The model train is a complete, ready-to-run HO Thomas the Tank Engine train with locomotive, cars, track and power supply. A $100 cash prize will be among additional raffle prizes. Another highlight will be rides on the depot’s big blue train (weather permitting). Another returning ride-on train will feature kid-powered flat cars. Vendors expected to be at the Expo will offer model trains and accessories of all scales.

• AARP Smart Driver, the new and enhanced driving refresher course from AARP Driver Safety, is offered at the Whitfield County Senior Center. Registration is from 8:30 to 8:55 a.m., the class is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The class will be taught by certified volunteer instructor Kelly Cherry. Since 1979, AARP Driver Safety has helped more than 15 million older drivers stay safe, educated and confident behind the wheel. AARP Smart Driver course participants learn valuable defensive driving skills; proven safety strategies; how to stay current with the latest driving technologies; the current rules of the road, specific to your state; and how to manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. Participants are encouraged to check with their insurance agent to verify the premium discount amount to be awarded. The class requires no tests to pass the course. • A new Dalton State College hiking trail is nearing completion and volunteers are needed to finish the job. A trail workday is this day and starts at 8 a.m. and ends at noon. The work is strenuous, and volunteers should be able to hike 30 minutes up the ridge to the work sites. Tools will be provided. • Help clean up litter along a roadway by joining in with Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful’s Earth Day Cleanup at 9 a.m. Volunteers will meet at the Need to Feed at 1754 Mill Creek Road and spend a few hours cleaning up the massively littered area. Because of the heavy traffic and rural atmosphere this road is ripe for attracting litter from those passing by and unsecured loads. • Many people like barbecue. Many like bacon. and many like both. Dalton residents and others have an opportunity to feast on both at the Burr Performing Arts Park from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the second annual BaconQue, a bacon- and barbecue-themed fundraiser for Family Frameworks, which works to build strong families, and Hope Spur, a Dalton nonprofit that raises funds to help people who can’t cover out-of-pocket costs for outpatient mental health treatment and counseling. Admission is free. There will be musical acts on the Burr Park stage throughout the day, ending with One For the Road, a local Southern rock and country act. There will also be kettle corn, baked goods and desserts and more, as well as arts and crafts vendors and a bouncy house and other activities for children.

• Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) hosts an Open House at all six campuses to provide an opportunity to learn more about the programs offered at GNTC, tour the facilities and meet faculty and staff. • An investiture ceremony highlighting Dalton State College President John Fuchko III is part of a two-day celebration. All events are free and open to the public. Kicking off the festivities on April 25, Dalton State will hold a celebration of the college’s history and legacy at 3 p.m. at the Burran Bell Tower and quadrangle on campus at 650 College Drive. Following the event at the bell tower, a community concert will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Burr Performing Arts Park at 101 S. Hamilton St. in downtown Dalton. Country duo Smith & Wesley will perform. The concert is billed as a casual and family-friendly event, with spectators encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Food trucks will be there. The investiture ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on April 26 inside the college’s Bandy Gymnasium at 661 George Rice Drive. Doors will open at 9:15 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., the investiture reception will begin with a short walk from the gymnasium to the bell tower, with shuttle services available. • The R&P Band headlines a celebration of Georgia’s cities at 6 p.m. at the Burr Performing Arts Park in downtown Dalton. Georgia Cities Week takes place April 21-27. The band will play classic and favorite rock hits. It’s a celebration that the Georgia Municipal Association organizes in the spring each year statewide to celebrate the role of municipalities and municipal governments in making life better for the residents that live there. It gives city officials an opportunity to share information with residents about the services the cities provide and about community enhancements.

• This year’s Bill Gregory Health Care Classic is this day. This is the 41st year of the Classic, which features participants in 10K, 5K or 2K events throughout parts of Dalton. This year’s race seeks to shine a spotlight on “healthy lifestyles and environments.” Nonprofit Live4It Community is again partnering with Bradley Wellness Center to organize the event. Gregory, who was a physician with Hamilton Health Care System, tragically died in 2006 after a bicycling accident. Early registration is open and available at www.live4itcommunity.org until April 12 at $25, while regular registration will be open April 13-27 at $35. Those who preregister online will receive a special race T-shirt.

Bird banding is a helpful technique used for studying and identifying individual birds. David DesRochers, a professor at Dalton State College, will present the demonstration. You will learn how licensed professionals safely catch and handle birds as well as why bird banding is so important. You may stop by anytime between 8 a.m. and noon at the Peeples Hall Patio at Dalton State College. Bring your friends or family, but please leave your furry friends at home.

• The 24th annual Spring Place Ruritan Club Golf Tournament is at Indian Trace Golf Course. Proceeds support the Spring Place Ruritan Club’s numerous service projects in Murray County. The shotgun start will be at 8:30 a.m. The tournament is a 4-man select shot event with space for up to 25 teams. The cost is $60 per person. Several prizes will be awarded. There will be a free barbecue lunch with homemade desserts for all participants at the awards ceremony at the end of the tournament. • Ready to learn how to start birding or already a seasoned pro? Birders of all levels are encouraged to join Dalton State College biology student and avid birder Katie Pittman on a free half-mile bird watching hike from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Learn to identify species and listen to the beautiful music of our native birds. Bringing your binoculars is encouraged, but there will be equipment on loan if needed. Meet at the Cascade trailhead, on the edge of the Brown Hall parking lot on the north end of campus. This is a presentation of the Dalton Resilient Communities Project through Keep Dalton-Whitfield Beautiful.
• Whitfield County pet owners can get their cats and dogs vaccinated against rabies and other diseases and microchipped for a reduced price from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Whitfield County Animal Shelter at 156 Gillespie Drive in Dalton. No appointment is necessary. Walk-ins are welcome. The shelter will offer two packages. For $10, pet owners can get their cats and dogs vaccinated for rabies, distemper and parvo. For $20, they can get vaccinations for all those diseases and also get their pet microchipped. A chip can help identify a pet if it gets lost or runs away. Pets can be microchipped anytime for $10. The rabies vaccine will be the one-year variant. Owners will need to provide a driver’s license or other documentation to show they are Whitfield County residents.
