The Dalton Board of Education on Friday morning approved the hiring of Chris Prewett as the new head football coach of the Dalton High School Catamounts. Prewett, who was approved by a unanimous vote, has been the head coach at Roswell High School for five years. His team finished second in Region 7-5A with a 9-3 overall record and a 5-1 region mark.

“I am excited to get up there and get rolling,” Prewett said by phone during the special called meeting on Friday.

Prewett and his wife Ashley have two young children.

Prewett was 50-13 in five years as head coach at Roswell. His teams made three consecutive appearances in the Georgia High School Association quarterfinals and claimed region championships in 2022 and 2023.

“Coach Prewett’s remarkable accomplishments and dedication to excellence make him the ideal choice to lead our football program,” Steven Craft, superintendent of Dalton Public Schools, said in a press release. “His proven ability to inspire both athletic and academic success aligns perfectly with our district’s mission to prepare students for success in college, career and life.”

Prewett is a graduate of LaGrange College, where he earned a bachelor of science in mathematics and a master of arts in teaching.

He was a graduate assistant and assistant linebackers coach at LaGrange College from 2012-14 before taking a job at Johns Creek High School (2015-17) where he was defensive coordinator and secondary coach.

From 2017-20, Prewett was the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Roswell.

“I am very excited to be chosen to lead this storied program filled with tradition and history,” Prewett stated in the press release. “My goal is to continue the winning tradition of Dalton football and establish a program that the community of Dalton will be proud of and take pride in. I am ready to get to work and begin the process of building Dalton football back to its winning ways.”

The Catamounts finished 0-10 in 2024, their final season under Kit Carpenter, who resigned after five seasons.
