Competitions
• The Westside Nationals 7-8 boys baseball team will sponsor a men’s softball tournament on March 7 at Tunnel Hill Park, with the proceeds going toward the purchase of uniforms. Entry fee is $125 per team. Call (706) 218-5771.
• North Georgia/Chattanooga USFA softball tournaments are scheduled at Heritage Point on March 6, March 20-21, April 3 and April 17-18; at Chattanooga’s Warner Park on March 13; and at Tinsley Park in Cleveland, Tenn., on April 10-11. • An early bird tournament sponsored by the Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins softball team from March 8-13 will be open to only 10-under recreation teams. The format will be three pool games and a single-elimination tournament played at the high school’s softball field in Tunnel Hill. The first six teams to pay the entry fee of $125 will be taken. • The St. Patrick’s 20-TENnis Tournament for high school and middle school girls and boys is scheduled for March 12-14 at Dalton Golf and Country Club. Singles and doubles with a two-match guarantee; trophies awarded to finalists in each category. All participants will receive a tourney T-shirt and balls will be provided. • The Northwest Whitfield High School Tee Club will host a two-person select shot tournament on March 14 at Nob North. Cost is $75 per person and includes lunch, three mulligans and one red tee; awards will be presented for closest to the pin and longest drive. Funds raised will benefit the Northwest golf program. • On March 21, former pro cyclist Saul Raisin of Dalton will run in the Georgia Marathon to raise money for his RaisinHope Foundation, which benefits brain and spinal cord-related facilities. Raisin encourages runners to sign up to run with his RaisinHope team; by doing so, participants get $5 off the half-marathon entry fee and $10 off the marathon fee. The discount code for the half-marathon is raisinhalf10 and raisinmar10 for the marathon online at inggeorgiamarathon.com. Deadline is Feb. 21.
• The Spring Place Ruritan Club golf tournament, a four-man select shot event with space for 25 teams, will be played March 27 at Indian Trace Golf Course in Chatsworth with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. In the event of bad weather, it will be played April 24. Entry fee is $55 per player. Prizes include $400 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third. • The North Georgia Tennis Association’s Terry Wood Memorial City Championship Tennis Tournament will be held April 24-25. This annual event benefits the American Heart Association. Clinics, classes
• Northwest Whitfield baseball will host a clinic for boys in first-eighth grades from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 13 at the high school. The clinic will include individual and group instruction on fundamentals of the game from Northwest coaches and players as well as middle school coaches. The Bruins will hold a short practice at the conclusion of the clinic and participants are invited to watch. Cost is $25 and checks should be made payable to the Northwest Dugout Club; youth coaches are invited to attend for free and will receive a handbook with helpful drills and tips.
