Council considers reaffirming radar use by police

The Dalton City Council heard the first reading Monday of an ordinance to reaffirm the ability of the Dalton Police Department to use radar on some three dozen city streets. The ordinance is being updated to acknowledge that the names of some of those streets have been changed.

Council members voted 4-0 to:
• Declare the east side of Spencer Street from Fort Hill Drive to Hagen Street no parking.
• Approve rezoning of a parcel on Barbara Avenue to general commercial from high density residential. The parcel is surrounded by property that is zoned commercial, and the rezoning was recommended by the Dalton-Whitfield Planning Commission.
• Approve an $11,269 change order for irrigation at new soccer fields at James Brown Park.
• Approve an $1,850 contract with Gilbert and Associates of Lawrenceville for grant writing services for the federal Community Housing Improvement Program (CHIP) for the city’s 2012 grant.
• Approve 99 alcoholic beverage license applications or renewals.

Council members also proclaimed November as National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and National Alzheimer’s Disease Month, and heard a presentation from the Dalton Historical Preservation Commission honoring Juan Lama and the Whitfield-Murray Historical Commission for their work on preserving historic Dalton buildings.
