Bruce Broadrick took an early lead in Tuesday’s Republican primary for state House of Representatives District 4. But it wasn’t until the final votes were counted that he knew he wasn’t going to have to face a runoff.

“It has been a long night. But I’m really happy and very humbled that the voters have chosen me,” Broadrick said.

Broadrick finished with 2,394 votes (53.01 percent) in a three-way race. David Renz finished with 1,103 votes (24.42 percent), and Dennis Mock received 1,019 votes (22.56 percent). Rep. Roger Williams, R-Dalton, who currently represents District 4, announced his retirement earlier this year. The district includes the city of Dalton and a few surrounding areas. No Democrat qualified for that race.

“I tried to stay on the issues and put a plan forth to help make things better here in Dalton and Whitfield County. I am so appreciative to my supporters and the people who voted me,” Broadrick said. “The other two candidates are good guys. We all ran a good clean race.”

Broadrick said he will get to work today taking up his campaign signs.

“I’ve also got a lot of thank yous to make. My family really stepped up. My supporters did a lot of hard work,” he said.

Longer term, Broadrick said, he’ll be getting ready for the start of the next session of the General Assembly in January when he takes office.

“There are a lot of challenges out there. But challenges also present opportunities,” he said. “I’m going to be studying the issues, working with other local leaders, trying to see what alliances I can build. I’m just going to try to learn as much as I can.”

According to the Georgia Secretary of State’s website, incumbent Jay Neal defeated Steve Tarvin in the Republican primary for state House District 2 by 5,024 votes (56.95 percent) to 3.797 votes (44.05 percent).

Redistricting placed Trickum, Tunnel Hill and Westside in Whitfield County in District 2. No Democrat qualified for the position, so unless an independent qualifies, Neal will be unopposed in November.

Tarvin defeated Neal in Whitfield County by 851 votes (55.19 percent) to 691 (44.81 percent).
