Dr. Edna Mae Massengill, of Riverdale and formerly of Dalton, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Piedmont Fayette Hospital in Fayetteville.

She was born in Barnesville to the late George Edward and Clara Mae Battle Dunson, and was preceded in death by her husband, Willie R. Massengill, and sister, Jenelle Dunson-Rogers.

Mrs. Massengill was employed with the Dalton Public Schools system for more than 31 years, served as principal of Morris Street School, was a member of the State and National Board of Education Association, member of the Retired Whitfield-Dalton Education Community Service, member of the review board for the Juvenile Court System, state certified mediator, has served as mediator for the court system, member of Church Women United and served several terms as secretary for the Women’s Community Club. She graduated from Barnesville High School and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science from Fort Valley State College and later earned a doctorate of education administration from Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

She is survived by her daughters, Cassandra Lighting and Ursula (John) Briggs Jr.; grandchildren, Jerrica Mone Lighting, John D. “Jack” Briggs III and Joshua Briggs; sisters, Bobbie Simpson, Sallie M. (Eugene) McFarlin, Linda (Frank) Robinson and Gwendolyn Tillman-Dennard; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Services will be from Mountain Ridge Baptist Church at 1401 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. on Saturday at noon with Dr. Jerry D. Jones Sr. officiating.

The family will receive friends today at the funeral home from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Interment will be at West Hill Cemetery.
