Heroin use, juvenile record no longer barrier to police work in some areas

Faced with a shortage of applicants and a mandate to attract more non-white officers, police departments are rethinking requirements once considered untouchable. Departments across the nation are lowering fitness and education requirements and removing bans on those who have used drugs, including heroin. — The New York Times

Immigration is changing the Swedish welfare state

After nine years in Sweden, only half of immigrants have a job. Even after 20 years of residency, foreign-born adults are less likely than the native-born to have jobs. This has put a strain on the nation’s generous welfare system. The government has tried to reduce costs by limiting benefits to immigrants. — The Economist

Obamacare enrollees rate coverage worse than others with health insurance

U.S. adults who purchased their health insurance coverage through a federal or state health care exchange — about 15 percent of those who report having insurance — rate the quality of their coverage lower than do those who purchased their coverage via another source. — Gallup

Coast Guard rescues man in duct-tape boat

A man was rescued in the waters of Alaska after the U.S. Coast Guard says he was traveling in a boat made out of duct tape. Officials say they received a report about a man paddling a homemade watercraft in the Gastineau channel. It was apparently taking on water. — CBS News

Bear joins Colorado race

Runners didn’t expect to see a bear on their Colorado race route. At about the halfway mark of the Garden of the Gods 10-Mile Run a bear ambled up to the roadway in Colorado Springs. A witness said the animal seemed to be trying to decide whether to zip across the road filled with runners when a large enough gap finally emerged for the bear to get through. — The Denver Post

Man jailed for fake drugs says doing ‘God’s work’

A man accused of taking fake drugs to the Bonnaroo music festival in Tennessee last week was arrested on a similar charge at the Wakarusa music festival in Arkansas in 2015. David Edward Brady told deputies from the Coffee County sheriff’s office in Tennessee he was doing “God’s work” by selling fake drugs. Deputies found Brady with about 1,000 hits of fake LSD, 37 pills made to look as if they were Molly (which alters mood and perception), 22 bags of fake mushrooms, 20 bags made to look like cocaine and an incense stick made to look like black tar heroin. — ArkansasOnline
