Tiny dog patrols world’s largest naval base

When Jordyn Japec met his new partner at Naval Station Norfolk, he was a bit taken aback. “At first it was a little shocking,” he shared. “When I got here they were like ‘Hey, you’re getting Pusko. He’s like this little tiny narcotics dog.'” Pusko is a 16-pound Jagdterrier mixed with Belgian Malinois. At two years old, he’s considered fully-grown, which makes him less than a quarter the size of traditional military working dogs. — WTKR

Boozing British Baby Boomers straining National Health Service

Alcohol-related hospital admissions in England have increased by 64 percent in a decade and are at their highest ever level, prompting experts to warn that Baby Boomers are continuing to risk their health through frequent and excessive drinking. There were an estimated 1.1 million admissions where alcohol was the primary or secondary issue last year. — The Guardian

Trump approval down overall, but up among Hispanics

Overall, President Donald Trump’s approval rating is down, according to a new poll from Zogby Analytics. The poll found 43 percent of likely voters approve of him, down from 48 percent in February. But Trump’s approval rating remains strong among his base, and in a surprise, his approval rating among Hispanics rose to 45 percent, two points higher than his overall approval rating. — Zogby Analytics

Backlash after biracial student wins black beauty contest

A University of Texas-Austin student is dealing with a lot of backlash and Twitter trolls after being crowned as the 2017 Miss Black University of Texas at an annual pageant. Why? Because some think she isn’t “black enough.” Rachael Malonson, who has a black father and a white mother, was crowned the winner. But after the fraternity that hosted the pageant posted photos to Twitter, people began to flood in with comments about her not being black enough — or not even being black at all. — USA Today

North Dakota driver learns lesson about metric system

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Manitoba’s Facebook page, a North Dakota motorist pulled over for speeding wasn’t quite sure why. He said he’d been following the speed limit of 100 mph. The speed limit was actually 100 kilometers per hour (about 62 mph) and he was going 68 kmh over the speed limit. The result? A $940 ticket. — Grand Forks Herald
