What’s wrong with Connecticut?

Despite being the richest state in the country, by per-capita income, Connecticut’s budget is a mess. Its pensions are woefully under-funded. Its deficit is projected to surpass $2 billion, or 12 percent of its total annual tax revenue. Hartford, the state’s capital city, is approaching bankruptcy. The state’s population has fallen for three straight years. Only Michigan, Ohio and Mississippi had slower job growth than Connecticut did during the last two decades. One of the most reliably Democratic states in the nation, it has some of America’s worst income inequality. — The Atlantic

Clinton confetti now part of snow globe

Early on election night last November, artist Bunny Burson looked to New York City’s Javits Center ceiling, expecting confetti to fall to celebrate Hillary Clinton becoming the nation’s first woman president. But the confetti never fell. Crushed by Clinton’s loss to President Donald Trump, Burson began an almost two-week journey to track down the confetti, which she thought would make great material for artwork. — St. Louis Public Radio

Transgender inmate accused of improper contact with other inmates

An investigation is underway at a southeast Missouri jail over a transgender inmate after complaints emerged about inappropriate contact. The sheriff’s office said as soon as the office heard about complaints it took steps to separate the transgender individual and the female inmates.  — Fox St. Louis

African refugees dislike Baltic States’ cold weather, stingy benefits

Many refugees relocated to the small Baltic states by the European Union end up moving elsewhere in Europe. They cite the lack of other Africans and the stingy benefits, relative to other European nations, they receive as the reasons why they move.  — BBC

Men and Republicans are the best tippers

A new survey finds men, Republicans and residents of the northeast are the best tippers. And those who pay with a credit or debit card tip more on average than those who pay with cash. — Bloomberg

Ferrari owner learns to be careful about parking

A Ferrari driver in southeast England learned a valuable lesson about why you should always obey parking signs. The driver ignored warnings against leaving vehicles on the ninth level of the parking lot at Brighton’s Marina overnight on Saturdays. He returned on Sunday morning to find his expensive sports car surrounded by a flea market. — Huffington Post
