Conyers retires, family feud ensues

Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., the longest-serving member of the U.S. House of Representatives and the subject of a flurry of sexual-misconduct allegations in the last few weeks has announced his retirement, setting off a family feud over who will inherit his seat in Congress. The embattled Democrat says his son, John Conyers III, should replace him. But Conyers’ nephew, Ian Conyers, says he wants the seat. — The Daily Beast 

Soldiers guard Europe’s streets from terrorism. Critics say that weakens them in war

Confronted by terrorism, European leaders rushed their armies onto their streets in the aftermath of attacks starting in 2015. Advocates say the deployments help bolster security, but peacetime duty has stretched forces thin. Until recently, for instance, 40 percent of Belgium’s soldiers were devoted to domestic guard duty. “I had machine gunners with the rifle section who didn’t fire a machine gun in 16 months,” said Maj. Gen. Marc Thys, commander of Belgium’s land forces. — Washington Post

It’s what wine-drinking Hello Kitty fans have been waiting for. Bottles of alcohol adorned with everyone’s favorite cartoon cat have launched online and in supermarkets in time for the holidays. — The Independent

Protesters want Notre Dame to remove Columbus murals

Notre Dame students, employees and alumni say Christopher Columbus is no hero and they want 12 prominent murals that were painted in the 19th century and depict what they say is glorified version of Columbus removed from campus. They say the works cast a pall on the school and are the school’s “own version of a Confederate monument.” — ABC News
