• The Dalton-Whitfield County Public Library offers a free TnT Nerf War from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Grab your blasters and a pocket full of darts. Each month the library offers Nerf games like Capture the Flag, Battle Royale, VIP. The library provides blasters and darts to those who need them (4th-12th grade).

Tuesday

• The Benton MacKaye Trail Association sponsors a tour of Project Chimps along with a Lunch Launch. It will be using the extra large mounted sling shots to shoot cabbage, peppers, lettuce, etc., into the air into the habitat area. Following the chimps lunch will be a hike of the 4-mile trail at Project Chimps. There is a $25 donation to Project Chimps (cash/check) minimum. • The Dalton Whitfield Murray Retired Educators Association (DWMREA) meets at Edna’s restaurant in Chatsworth. Lunch is at noon and the program is at 12:45 p.m. The program consists of a Murray County Schools presentation and DWMREA business items.

• The Creative Arts Guild at 520 W. Waugh St. hosts “Thirsty Thursdays, Sip and Create” with Paula Plott Gregg from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. Each month participants will complete art projects from jewelry making to painting to creating seasonal decor and more. Supplies are included in the price of the class. Participants are welcome to bring their own adult beverages, or purchase beverages through the Guild. • The Creative Arts Guild at 520 W. Waugh St. hosts a workshop titled “Expressive Painting in Acrylics with Bradley Wilson” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. In this course students will practice the methods of expressive acrylic painting while exploring a variety of subject matter and receiving instructor feedback on work. This class is especially geared toward those with some acrylic painting experience (sorry, not suitable for beginners). Approaching painting as play will be emphasized while focusing on solid technique and other important skills. Students will be given “monthly challenges” for painting projects to work on at home and bring in for critique. Students will provide their own materials; please see the Guild’s registration portal for material suggestions. This is offered as one workshop per month; you must register for each workshop you would like to attend. The cost is $40 per workshop. • The Spring Place Cemetery Committee and the Spring Place Ruritan Club have a cleanup day at the historic Spring Place Cemetery starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers will pick up litter, remove debris and fallen limbs, rake leaves, prune bushes and trees, and clean markers in the cemetery before the mowing season begins. The cemetery on Tibbs Bridge Road just west of Ga. 225 is one of the area’s oldest burial grounds with marked graves dating back to the 1840s when Spring Place was the seat of government for a Murray County that included all of Whitfield and parts of several other North Georgia counties. More than 100 Mexican and Civil War veterans and veterans of every war since are interred there along with Murray County’s own “unknown soldier” from the U.S. Army. It’s the final resting place of several of the area’s oldest white settlers, a former slave, past county officials and a couple of pets along with early doctors, ministers, lawyers, educators, businessmen, a merchant ship captain and even Charlie Brown, only this Charlie Brown was the town postmaster. Get your gloves and bring your tools to join the group for a history lesson and to enhance the appearance of this sacred spot. • The Benton MacKaye Trail Association and the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club join together for a 5.3-mile, moderately strenuous group hike. This hike starts at Wilscot Gap (Ga. • The Benton MacKaye Trail Association guides a moderate 6-mile hike to the remains of Caney Creek Village, Tennessee, in the Cherokee National Forest Begin at 1,604 feet elevation and hike down to 840 feet elevation to see the remains of Caney Creek Village, then hike back up. • The Wright Hotel, a property of the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society, is one of the area’s most unique pieces of history. The 1909 building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places twice, as an individual property and as part of the Chatsworth Historic District. It is at the corner of Market Street and Second Avenue. The principal fundraiser for the hotel is a twice-a-year Porch Sale that features collectibles, books, glassware, tools, decorations, artwork and household items. The spring sale is March 22-23 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days. All items are donated and all proceeds will go toward special needs at the building. • The Whitfield County Democrats’ annual Chili Cook-off is at the Mack Gaston Community Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The group will collect canned goods and staples for the Trinity United Methodist Church food pantry. Tickets are $6 and include chili, fixings, drink and dessert. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online for eat-in or to-go. • The Dalton-Whitfield County Public Library has its annual free Author Fest from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event celebrates authors, artists, books and literacy. More than 39 authors and artists will be in attendance, and there will be multiple genres and books for all ages. Plus there will be discussion panels and a kids’ corner with fun, free activities and crafts.

• AARP Smart Driver, the new and enhanced driving refresher course from AARP Driver Safety, is offered at the Whitfield County Senior Center. Registration is from 8:30 to 8:55 a.m., the class is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The class will be taught by certified volunteer instructor Kelly Cherry. Since 1979, AARP Driver Safety has helped more than 15 million older drivers stay safe, educated and confident behind the wheel. AARP Smart Driver course participants learn valuable defensive driving skills; proven safety strategies; how to stay current with the latest driving technologies; the current rules of the road, specific to your state; and how to manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. Participants are encouraged to check with their insurance agent to verify the premium discount amount to be awarded. The class requires no tests to pass the course.
