• The Friends of the Library has a book sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dalton-Whitfield County Public Library.

• The annual Back To School Jam takes place at the Mack Gaston Community Center, 218 N. Fredrick St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Dalton-Whitfield NAACP and Shaw Industries. There will be free school supplies for children, food, games and more.

Saturday-Sunday

• The Artistic Civic Theatre presents a production based off of the 1964 film “Mary Poppins.” Shows are in the Hammond Creek Middle School auditorium Saturday, Aug. 3, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 4, at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online, with prices based on seating. Standard tickets are $30, premium tickets are $35 and value tickets are $25. ACT member discounts are available, but no group discounts will be offered. Tickets will also be available at the door. • The City of Dalton Recreation Commission will hold a called meeting at noon in the second floor west conference room at Dalton City Hall for an executive session to discuss personnel.

• The Carpet Capital Chapter of the Berry College Alumni Association meets at the Oakwood Cafe beginning at 5:30 p.m. The guest speaker is David Slade, Berry’s provost and chief academic officer. A Berry grad (Class of 1997), Slade will share updates from the college including about the new Physicians Associate program, the latest academic initiatives and the status of the presidential search to replace retiring President Stephen Briggs. The Carpet Capital alums will also recognize three young people from the area who are current students at Berry and who receive scholarships in memory of longtime local alumni leaders Clay Kenemer and Jesse Jones. • The Creative Arts Guild at 520 W. Waugh St. in Dalton holds a workshop titled “Expressive Painting in Acrylics with Bradley Wilson” starting this day. The class is for ages 18 and up. The cost is $40 per workshop. In this course, students practice the methods of expressive acrylic painting while exploring a variety of subject matter and receiving instructor feedback. This is offered as two workshops per month. You must register for each workshop you would like to attend. Aug. 10

• Dunagan Cemetery in Rocky Face holds its second Saturday work day at the cemetery beginning at 8 a.m. Weed-eater and push-mower volunteers are especially needed. Mowing season at the cemetery runs April through October each year. After the project is complete, biscuits, coffee and juice will be served. Contributions to the cemetery operating fund in memory of or in honor of loved ones are always appreciated and may be sent to Millie Hicks, treasurer, 774 LaFayette Road S.W., Rocky Face, GA 30740. • The Chatsworth Depot and the Wright Hotel, owned by the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society, offer the conclusion of their summer Second Saturday events with guided tours from 1 to 4 p.m. This opening celebrates Thomas the Tank Engine at the depot. The hotel is celebrating its 115th anniversary with special displays and souvenirs. Admission to tours and trains is free, but donations are appreciated. An HO Scale and G Scale Thomas and his friends will be running on the depot’s permanent indoor model train displays. The “Big Blue Train” will offer train rides around the block. There will be a special area inside the depot with wooden Brio Trains for the smallest train fans to get “hands on” playtime with Thomas and friends. Making a return visit will be kid-powered train rides. Will and Ralph Callahan, hikers from Chatsworth, will share some of their experiences, showing some equipment used in hiking and answering questions. The hotel will feature new photographic displays as well as offer souvenir T-shirts, buttons, magnets and coasters to commemorate the hotel’s first 115 years. Proceeds from these items as well as donations will go toward the continued preservation of the three-story building.

Aug. 12

• The Benton MacKaye Trail Association guides a “moderate” 2.6-mile hike to Whigg Meadow East. Participants will drive to the Mud Gap Trailhead of the trail at mile 3.5 on the North Carolina side of the Cherohala Skyway. “We will hike on an old roadbed steadily uphill to the 5,000-foot summit of Whigg Meadow, a large, wide open bald with expansive views into the surrounding mountains,” organizers said. • The Benton MacKaye Trail Association guides a 5-mile, “moderate” hike on Emery Creek. The trail for this in-and-out hike is fairly easy, organizers said, but there are 26 stream crossings (a number up to your ankles and two around your knees). • “Game Time in Spring Place” is the theme for the 27th annual Spring Place Community Festival at the Old Spring Place Methodist Church. A used book sale, breakfast biscuits, a bake sale, an indoor flea market, a games raffle and other activities will begin at 8 a.m. Highlighting the day is the auction including artist prints, collectibles and historical memorabilia, furniture, rugs, antiques and gift cards donated by area businesses. The outdoor auction begins at 10 a.m. The festival is cosponsored by the Spring Place Ruritan Club. Artifacts from Cherokee stickball and card games to board games and Xbox will be featured in a special display. • The Emery Center’s opening/tour hours are Wednesdays from 10:15 a.m. to noon, 12:15 to 2 p.m. and 2:15 to 4 p.m. Other days by appointment only. Staff can be contacted at (706) 277-7633 or (706) 280-7695. The Emery Center is at 110 W. Emery St. The Emery Street School building, which is now the Emery Center, is celebrating 100 years this year. It has 12 rooms of historical displays. Donations accepted.

• The 1848 Blunt House at 506 S. Thornton Ave. is open every Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and upon request. Admission is free but donations are appreciated. The house was the home of three generations of the Ainsworth Emery Blunt family until 1980 when his youngest granddaughter left it to the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society.
