Thursday

• The city of Dalton has a full day of events scheduled at Heritage Point Park and the Mack Gaston Community Center as part of its Fourth of July celebration. The events kick off at 9 a.m. with an old-timers softball game at Heritage Point. A pickup softball tournament follows at 10 a.m., also at Heritage Point. The splash pad at the community center opens at noon. Music starts on the Heritage Point stage at 4 p.m. Registration for the cornhole tournament takes place at 4:30 at Heritage Point, and the tournament kicks off at 5:30. Registration for the Little Miss Recreation pageant is at 5:30, and the pageant starts at 6:30. The day will end at around 9:30 with a fireworks show at Heritage Point.

• American Legion Post 112 hosts a free cookout for veterans and their families at 6 p.m. at 1118 N. Glenwood Ave. in Dalton. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served. Live entertainment will be provided by The Ramhurst Blues Society.

• City of Varnell residents are invited to attend the co-sponsored fireworks with the Highland Forest community. The fireworks will be at the Highland Forest pool area at 9:30 p.m.

• The Benton MacKaye Trail Association guides an “easy” 6-mile hike on the Lost Creek section of the trail. Adults may bring a leashed dog. • The Creative Arts Guild’s Gallery Opening and Artist Reception for July is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 520 W. Waugh St. in Dalton. The event is family-friendly and open to all with free admission. It’s the first opportunity for the public to view and purchase from the latest exhibits and speak with artists/curators. Refreshments and a cash bar will be available, as well as an arts-focused activity for kids. The galleries are also open to the public with free admission during normal operating hours: Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please note: Because of the Fourth of July weekend, these exhibits will open to the public July 8 but the reception will be July 12. • The Chatsworth Depot and the Wright Hotel, properties of the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society, continue the Second Saturday openings for 2024. Both buildings as well as the caboose will again be open for guided tours from 1 to 4 p.m. with a Singing at the Depot concert starting at 4. Admission is free, but donations are always appreciated. The event features the return to Chatsworth for local singers Jonathan Langford, Jonathan Hare and Kenny Seabolt accompanied by Cessna Langford as a guest singer.

• Olivia Baptist Church in Dalton will hold its vacation bible school from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The church is at 1817 Guy St.

• A benefit gospel concert will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 112 at 1118 N. Glenwood Ave. in Dalton. Sponsored by the Church at Mineral Springs, the concert will benefit local 7-year-old Dash, who has been diagnosed with brain cancer, and his family and will pay for medical, living, food and travel expenses. The concert will include performances from Ramhurst Blues Society and guest musicians from the community.

• The 2024 edition of Vann House Day gets underway at 10 a.m. at the Chief Vann House Historic Site in Spring Place. The program, first held in 1978, commemorates the locally initiated effort that resulted in the purchase, preservation, restoration and reopening of the nationally known Cherokee mansion as a museum in 1958. Vann House Day continues to focus on tours and living history demonstrations to describe life in the early 1800s when the Vanns and other families occupied the house. The Vann House is at the corner of Ga. 225 and Alternate 52, three miles west of Chatsworth. Program hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission will be charged. • “Game Time in Spring Place” is the theme for the 27th annual Spring Place Community Festival at the Old Spring Place Methodist Church. A used book sale, breakfast biscuits, a bake sale, an indoor flea market, a games raffle and other activities will begin at 8 a.m. Highlighting the day is the auction including artist prints, collectibles and historical memorabilia, furniture, rugs, antiques and gift cards donated by area businesses. The outdoor auction begins at 10 a.m. The festival is cosponsored by the Spring Place Ruritan Club. Artifacts from Cherokee stickball and card games to board games and Xbox will be featured in a special display.
