NEWNAN — Georgia authorities do not plan to file charges against a Coweta County man who was involved in a hit-and-run accident in Alabama after killing his dog and taking his two children from their home on Monday, Sgt. John Lewis of the Coweta County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday.
“At this time the only criminal charges are in Alabama,” Lewis said. “We’ve spoken with the judge on it. At this time we are probably not going to pursue anything.”
Police Chief Dennis Surrett of Lincoln, Ala., said Danny Davis, 41, told police he does not remember what happened at his home, where he had been or where he was going when he was involved in the accident.
Surrett said the two children, ages 10 and 8, were not harmed in the accident at Lincoln, about 90 miles northwest of Newnan.
Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager says the way Davis left is “bizarre.”
Davis’ wife, Ann Marie Davis, told authorities she returned from a shopping trip Monday to find the house empty and the family dog shot to death.
She went to Alabama Tuesday to pick up her children but left her husband in jail. Authorities had arrested him on a charge of leaving an accident.
Davis was bailed out Tuesday on $500 bond. A jail spokesman did not know who bailed him out. The police chief says Davis’ parents were coming from Texas.
Police say Davis’ next court appearance in Lincoln is March 30.
