Trump wants to arm teachers. Many schools already do

Hundreds of school districts across the country already have armed teachers. In Texas alone, more than 100 school districts have teachers and other personnel armed and trained to respond to an attack. Texas has been arming teachers for more than a decade. But Sidney City Schools in Ohio started its program after the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Working with the local sheriff’s office, the school created a “layered” security plan that includes panic buttons and security cameras that feed to the sheriff’s office and armed volunteers vetted and trained by the sheriff’s office. — The New York Times
California has worst quality of life in the United States
A study by U.S. News & World Report ranked the “quality of life” of residents of every state and found California came in last. Quality of life takes into account a state’s “air quality, pollution, voter participation, social support and more,” according to U.S. News. — People
Merkel admits Germany has ‘no-go’ areas
German Chancellor Angela Merkel made a major concession to Europe’s populist movement when she admitted the existence of “no-go zones” in Germany. Populists have long warned of the existence of such zones as the partial consequence of mass Muslim migration from the Middle East and Africa, particularly after Merkel opened Germany’s borders in 2015 as a response to the Syrian refugee crisis. Such areas are said to be dogged by high levels of crime and are described as “no-go zones” because outsiders, including police and other authorities, are unable to enter. But Merkel and other lawmakers had previously denied the existence of such areas. — WXXV
‘Black Panther’ seating dispute leads to gunfire, arrests

Two people in Greenville, N.C., were arrested for allegedly firing a gun in a movie theater during a screening of “Black Panther” in a dispute over seats. Shameka Latrice Lynch and Chadwick Early Cherry have been charged with discharging a firearm in an enclosure to incite fear and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. — New Haven Register
Sign causes stir at New Jersey post office
The United States Postal Service is investigating a sign put up outside its Flemington, N.J., location. Postal Inspector Greg Kliemisch said the sign, which read “March is national stop blaming white people month! Accept responsibility for your own bad choices. Hug a white person!” was taken down by employees. — nj.com
