Parents are packed in at the Dalton Convention Center waiting to pick up their children.

People are being asked to avoid the West Walnut Avenue and the I-75 area due to “severe traffic congestion” as parents pick up their students at the Dalton Convention Center after a shooting at Dalton High School this morning.

“If you don’t have to be in the West Walnut Avenue and the I-75 area, please avoid the area,” said Claude Craig, Whitfield County Emergency Management director.

At one point, traffic was backed up three miles on West Walnut Avenue.

The convention center is being used as the reunification center for students and parents. Students were evacuated from Dalton High and taken by bus to the convention center.

Social studies teacher Randal Davidson fired at least one shot at the school. Davidson is in custody. No children were seriously injured.
