The Trump Effect: businesses, anticipating less regulation, loosen purse strings

A wave of optimism has swept over American business leaders, and it is beginning to translate into the sort of investment in new plants, equipment and factory upgrades that bolsters economic growth, spurs job creation — and may finally raise wages significantly. While business leaders are eager for the tax cuts that take effect this year, the newfound confidence was initially inspired by the Trump administration’s regulatory pullback. — The New York Times

Britain’s National Health Service apologizes after assigning transgender nurse for cervical test

A woman who requested a female nurse to perform her pap smear test was “embarrassed and distressed” after a person with stubble and a deep voice summoned her for the procedure. The woman, who decided not to go ahead with the test, reminded the nurse she did not want a man performing the procedure. The nurse replied, “My gender is not male.” The woman said she thought, “Well, what does that even mean? You are clearly a man.” She said the nurse “had an obviously male appearance … close-cropped hair, a male facial appearance and voice, large number of tattoos and facial stubble.” The National Health Service apologized to the woman. — The Times

Congressional investigators find irregularities in FBI’s handling of Clinton email case

For the first time, investigators say they have secured written evidence the FBI believed there was evidence laws were broken when then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her top aides transmitted classified information through her insecure private email server. Investigators also confirmed the FBI began drafting a statement exonerating Clinton of any crimes while evidence responsive to subpoenas was still outstanding and before agents had interviewed more than a dozen key witnesses. — The Hill

Two killed outside teen club leave behind infant children

A teenage girl was among two people shot and killed by security guards outside a pop-up teen club in Florida. Jyhaad D. Grant, 25, and Julissa D. Jackson, 15, were found dead inside a vehicle after they were shot by two security guards who said they feared for their lives. Both left behind 2-month-old children. About 150 to 200 people were attending a teen “Pajama Jam.” The event was closed because of multiple fights and as the crowd was leaving, security guards heard gun shots. The guards were investigating where the gun shots were coming from and saw a person firing a gun from a car. Both security guards returned fire. — WFLA
