Florida man fights to keep pizza-loving pet alligator

Gwendolyn, a 47-year-old alligator who lives in Miami, isn’t your typical swamp-dwelling reptile. The 13-foot-long creature munches on cookies, pizza and even went to college with his owner. But state wildlife officials say the gator has grown too large for David Van Buren’s Miami home. State law says pet gators that are at least 6 foot long must have at least 2.5 acres to roam. — Sun-Sentinel
Medical marijuana cuts prescription drug use
A study by researchers at the University of Georgia found states with legalized medical marijuana had lower rates of prescription drug use. Not only that, but the government is saving money as a result of not having to pay for as much medicine for Medicare patients. The study found that prescriptions for conditions for which medical marijuana is prescribed — such as nausea, pain, seizures and sleep disorders — fell. But prescriptions for conditions that can’t be treated with medical marijuana did not. — Reason
Cops told not to eat at Washington restaurant; owner claims it’s a misunderstanding
Skagit County Sheriff Will Reichhardt says that the owner of the Lucky Teriyaki restaurant told two of his deputies as they were paying their bills not to come back. He says that when his chief deputy called to confirm their story the owner told him to tell other local law enforcement agencies they were not welcome there. When reached by local media, the owner of the restaurant, through an interpreter, said it had been a big misunderstanding and police are welcome at his business. — KOMO
Son of mom shielded by Dallas cops says he wants be a police officer

His mother went to protest police brutality in Dallas, but the two of them ended up being shielded by officers when a sniper started firing. Now, in a meeting with President Barack Obama, Jemar Taylor said he wants to be a police officer when he grows up. “The reason I wanted to be a police officer is that I wanna try to make this world a better place as much as I can,” he said. — ABC News
Cases of drug-resistant gonorrhea skyrocket
Antibiotic-resistant cases of gonorrhea have more than quadrupled in the United States. This new data, from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, should serve as a warning that “the future of current treatment options may be in jeopardy,” the agency said. — CBS News
