Dalton school board may seek help from state school boards association with superintendent search

A 14-year-old girl was killed and the driver of the car she was in was in critical condition after a crash on I-75 North in Whitfield County Monday night.

The juvenile, who had not been identified by the Georgia State Patrol, was ejected from the car after the driver lost control and the car crashed into the median guard rail and then was hit by a tractor-trailer, according to Trooper C.B. Terry.

The wreck happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. and occurred near mile marker 331 in Whitfield County, about two miles from the Walnut Avenue exit. Terry said the name of the driver was not being released because it is associated with the death of a juvenile.

According to Terry, a red Volkswagen Jetta was traveling in the middle lane of the interstate when the driver apparently lost control, the vehicle crashed into the median barrier and “yawed” several times before coming to a stop in the highway. A tractor-trailer behind the Jetta was unable to stop before hitting the car, pushing it across the highway into the median on the western side of the road.

The driver of the tractor-trailer wasn’t injured. Terry said the investigation into the crash continues, but no charges are expected to be filed.
