• The Dalton Whitfield NAACP is once again having a Christmas tree decoration competition at the Mack Gaston Community Center. The trees will be up and decorated by Monday, Dec. 9, and the public is invited to visit the lobby of the center to see the trees and vote for their favorite. Voting is open through Dec. 16 at 6:30 p.m.

• The Highland Rivers Behavioral Health Governing Board of Directors meets at 9:30 a.m. at the Cartersville Chamber of Commerce (122 W. Main St.). The meeting is open to the public. For more information, please call (706) 270-5000.
• Murray County Sole Commissioner Greg Hogan holds a called public hearing on the proposed 2025 budget at 10 a.m. in the hearing room of the county annex. Members of the public are encouraged to attend.

The house was the home of three generations of the Ainsworth Emery Blunt family until 1980 when his youngest granddaughter left it to the Whitfield-Murray Historical Society. • The Vann House hosts its Candlelight Tours event from 5 to 9 p.m. Visitors can tour the Vann House, decorated as the Moravians once did, after nightfall by candlelight. The candles will be extinguished at 9 p.m. so arrive by 8 to fully enjoy this event. If you can’t make the Candlelight Tours, the decorations will remain in place through Christmas and can be viewed during a guided tour. • For more than 32 years “The Nutcracker” ballet has been a tradition during the holiday season for the Northwest Georgia region. “Nutcracker 2024,” presented by the Dalton Arts Project, features more than 300 local and guest performers for performances Friday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 14, at 2 and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m., at the Colonnade theater at 264 Catoosa Circle in Ringgold. The third annual Merriest Christmas Extravaganza takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Dalton’s Burr Performing Arts Park. There will be at least 45 vendors selling various arts and crafts and foods. A DJ will be playing Christmas music all day. The band Hush Money will provide a free concert from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Santa Clause will make an appearance and Crowned Steel Multimedia will be taking professional photos from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be bounce houses anbd other activities for children.

• The Dalton-Whitfield Solid Waste Authority meets at 3:45 p.m. in the council chamber of Dalton City Hall.
• The Dalton Whitfield NAACP has a general membership meeting and Christmas party at 6:30 p.m. at the Mack Gaston Community Center and it is open to all.
Dec. 17
• The Dalton-Whitfield County Public Library hosts The Nutcracker Suite, its holiday celebration, from 5 to 7 p.m. This free, all-ages event pays homage to the holiday classic with an evening filled with crafts, readings, light refreshments and free photos with special guest Santa Claus.

Jan. 11, Feb. 8
• The Whitfield-Murray Historical Society offers two workshops designed to help family historians at various points in their research. “How do I start?” Beginner/intermediate research topics are on the agenda for Saturday, Jan. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break. Sack lunches will be available for $7 or participants may bring a lunch. “I’m stuck! I need help!” A Brick Walls workshop is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This workshop is available for intermediate and advanced researchers who have hit a wall. Lunch break is 12:30 to 1 p.m. Sack lunches will be available for $7 or participants may bring a lunch. The instructor for both sessions is Pam Shinnick, a local genealogist with 40 years of research experience. Classes will meet at the historical society headquarters, the Crown Gardens & Archives, at 715 Chattanooga Ave. in Dalton. To reserve a spot, call (706) 278-0217 or come by the archives. • The Dalton Whitfield Murray Retired Educators Association meets at noon for lunch at Yellowstone Steak & Buffet in Dalton. The program begins at 12:45. The meeting will feature a program on fraud prevention.

• The Dalton Whitfield Murray Retired Educators Association meets at the Poag Murray County Senior Center in Chatsworth. Covered dish supper begins at 6 p.m., with the program starting at 6:30. The meeting will feature scholarships, honor newly-retired educators, a remembrance ceremony, member awards and the installation of new officers.
