Bush veto well deserved

President Bush acted properly on Tuesday when he vetoed legislation which included deadlines for removing troops from Iraq.
The president followed though on his threat to veto the $124 billion dollar spending bill if it attempted to dictate military strategy.
Congress now needs to produce a proper bill which would authorize the additional money needed to fund operations in Iraq without attempting to tell the president and his military leadership how to lose the war.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi once again made the case for waging war by public opinion poll, as if Democratic gains in the House and Senate in 2006 magically changed the reality of what American policy makers face in the war on terror.
“This legislation respects the the wishes of the American people to end the Iraq war,” said Pelosi on Tuesday.
Democrats in Congress have had the opportunity to rise above partisan politics and work to secure American interests. They could have pushed the administration to amend weak policy, while maintaining a clear sense of unity in the broader picture.
They have chosen not to so. Instead of working to achieve success, they have gladly embraced defeat.
The president was right to reject their shameful legislation.
